To Do Tonight: On The Island

balthazar
[Balthazar]

Say what you will about us “posh” islanders Oper8tor, but here’s our list of choices for tonight:

-The James Blunt concert and after party at the newly opened Popburger
-Fridays at Sway brought to you by Mr. Belding in the new-old ATTIC settings
-Bob Sinclair at Mansion

So, while you’re having fun in your spandex, we’ll have to see who throws a better weekend come Monday. You definitely don’t have Balthazar…one thing we will ALWAYS have over you Brooklyn!

Weekend To Do: Brooklyn Edition II

Everyone’s been complaining how “preppish” we’ve been lately so here another “Brooklyn Weekend” things to do for you, from our female Brooklynite:

Take in an art house flick at BAM (if you haven’t seen Persepolis yet..Go!) followed by a post film discussion/farewell to weekend fancy brew at 4th Ave Pub, the greatest little bar in Brooklyn.

Brunch at Kitchenbar then a hike through Prospect Park (ok, I know it’s a little cold for this, but bundle up and drink lots of coffee!) to Kate Wollman Rink for a little afternoon ice skating. Seriously, this isn’t like Central Park, or Rockefeller Center. It’s basically you, your beau/buds, some really excited throngs of middle school boys and girls, and the bulky shadows of century old trees. No skyscrapers to be seen. It’s like a mini jaunt to the Berkshires…except it isn’t.

GofG’s Brooklyn Weekend Itinerary

31 under 31

[31 under 31 exhibit via humble arts foundation]

OK, It’s technically only my official FIRST day, but I’m just going to go ahead and take the liberty of deciding what Guest of a Guest’s weekend plans will be.  SO, the GofG’s weekend in Brooklyn itinerary is as follows:

delicate partyTonight we’ll join in the merry making and scantily dressed kids in Williamsburg for the weekly American Apparel/Viva Radio party, “Delicate”, at Hugs in the epicenter of it all. Everyone knows AA for it’s colorful soft cotton basics i.e. pink boy briefs and eggplant sheer jersey chemise and softer-core porn advertisements decorating the city and contributing to the dirty thoughts of everyone from young girls to old men. Viva Radio is the internet radio station playing everything from Howlin’ Wolf to Air and seems to be a very good friend of American Apparel. Party goers dressed in their pajamas will receive give aways and drink specials all night long. The party is called Delicate, though I’m sure its going to be anything but. More »

Condom Dresses Threaten Last Vestiges Of Times Square Sex Shops

condom dressesOk, not quite. I think those institutions, so abhorred by Guliani, will be around longer than cockroaches. But, we must admit, there are few things more intriguing and repulsive than an entire wardrobe made of condoms. A Brazilian artist, Adriana Bertini, took it upon herself to stretch the limits of resourcefulness by gathering up thousands of rejected condoms (which is not the same as used, obviously) to construct rather beautifully made garments with an eye for outrageous color. Grasping for the right words to describe the collection? David Gere, director of the Art Global Health Center, waxes poetic for those of us with only a few brain cells left by Friday afternoon: “Art has the unique power to educate memorably about HIV prevention — Bertini’s condom dresses are simply unforgettable — and to reduce the stigma of HIV/AIDS, which public health experts around the world agree are the biggest challenges we face.” Cool. I guess you just can’t wear them in the summer.

Oper8tor Here To “Dirty” Us Up A Bit

oper8tor profile
[Oper8tor]

Note from GofG: Observant, cultural theorist, and opinionated on everything from fashion trends to cheap beers. Live and Direct from the Planet of Brooklyn, Oper8tor has joined the team at Guest of a Guest to bring the insight and knowledge that, not going into the city on weekends or ever venturing above 14th St, deliberately brings.

It’s clear that BK (that means Brooklyn y’all) is pretty much the the epicenter of what is avant-garde, new, I could even say hip, these days in New York. From my first meeting with the gofg crew, I could tell I was dealing with an overly posh, refined bunch, that could use a bit of my flavor lying just across the bridge and over the river. That means more art and culture from the people who dress, look, and do things a bit funny, and a little bit dirtier, but all in the name of New York.

Miss Virginia, errr…I mean Miss Brooklyn

miss brooklynDoes anyone else find this funny? The latest “scandal” on the beauty pageant circuit is that the new Miss Brooklyn isn’t even from Brooklyn. She lives in Manhattan. And she’s actually a Virginian. Which I guess is kind of a slap in the face not only to those beautiful Brooklynites competing in the just-reinstated pageant which hasn’t been around since 1991 (and the last winner was not a Brooklynite either, but a Long Islander), but is also an insult to everyone in the borough—at least the ones that aren’t so super-excited the pageant is back that they actually CARE the winner doesn’t represent their corner of the city. Go Get ‘Em Girls, It’s Your Day!

leap year
[From the 1884 London News "Leap Year Ball"]

It’s Leap Year! Today is February 29th, a day that only comes around once every 4 years. Though there is an explanation for this calendar trickery, I still really don’t understand why we do this. Maybe to confuse the unfortunate ones that are born on this day? But, probably just to give a legitimate day for women to be able to ask men to marry them without feeling completely pathetic. Some called this day Sadie Hawkins day, based on the character in the Al Capp cartoon strip, a name that has remained the title of many a “girl-ask-boy” highschool dance. Anyway, go get’em tonight ladies! You have the entire universal calendar’s approval.

Friday Etiquette Guide: No One Cares About Your Diet, Or Your Fashion Crisis

cubicleasdf
Excuse me, woman in the cube to my left? The one with the loose flesh wobbling from your yappy jaws? Can you shut your freaking trap? And yes, people who wear Chloe boots sometimes ride the subway. It’s not worth a ten minute diatribe. Or, maybe you’re right. Maybe someone that rich would take a cab. Perhaps the boots were fake. Who cares?

New York City Goes (Really) Green

smart cabsJust in time for St. Patrick’s Day, Mayor Bloomberg has added new fuel-efficient rules targeting New York’s livery cars.  These rules come alongside Bloomberg’s plan to hybridize New York’s yellow cabs, which he announced last year.  According to the Associated Press, the plan would replace about 125 black gas guzzlers with hybrids between now and October, with the number growing each year until 2012.  And we all know that means … err … less pollution.  Or it just means that Bloomberg is REALLY into the environment.  Either way, it sounds good to me.

Friday Slack-Off Laugh Time

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

A friend directed me to this fine internet footage by emerging comedian Rachel Feinstein the other day.  So, if you are feeling a little, ahh, brain dead this Friday, and want a bit of hilarity to invade your vacant mind, spend a few minutes feasting your zombie eyes on this reenactment of a very special Thanksgiving Dinner.  Feinstein plays all of the characters—her mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. And after a hearty chuckle I have only two after thoughts to report:

  1. I thought blogging was fun, but I think people who get to wear wigs to work have one up on me.
  2. I hope when I’m thirty, my mama tells me all about the story of how she almost—but didn’t—abort me.  Fweh.

Gym Adventures

i miss scooter daysI’ve graduated from dodgeball, Freeze Tag, Steal The Flag and “Scooters”; to Power Yoga and Fluidity in my “gym class” digest. Sucks growing up huh? Over the past years I’ve realized that there are so many things that are unique to certain areas of the world, so many differences even between places in the U.S. From their social formalities, nuances, food choices; to the customary greetings, it is fascinating to be able to spend moments of your life under different barometers of normality. There are, however, certain things that seem to be universal no matter where you come from or where you’re going….one of these “universals” could very well be gym formalities.

In Manhattan, “gyms”, like “schools” and “grocery stores” are often smashed between office buildings, apartments, and Thai takeout places, and thus many times lack the social settings that one may be used to at their “country-club esque” health clubs back home. More »
