Jules Kirby is not just your average jet-setting international socialite. Rather than dazzling the benefit circle, Jules is more likely to be found on the beach surfing or diving in exotic destinations ranging from Thailand to St. Barths. This spring she added to her list of accolades and opened a boutique, Jolika, in Belle-ile-en-Mer, France - an island off the coast of Normandy where she’s called home since March 2007.

“Isn’t it amazing how many additives it takes to make something taste natural?” Dr. Reineccius [NYT]

This has come as no big shocker, to well, me at least.  Pinkberry, is “The All-Natural Taste That Wasn’t“  Seriously people, you really thought that you could have your cake and eat it too this time?  Even though the stuff is now officially being referred to as “frozen yogurt” (froyo as I like to call it), that doesn’t mean that what you’re really getting is a load of synthetic garbage. What do you expect for something that’s under 100 calories?? Go see for yourself on their menu that they finally have posted on their website.

Their “swirly goodness” is made up of 23 items including:

“Three kinds of sugar: sucrose, fructose and dextrose. Fructose and maltodextrin, another ingredient, are both laboratory-produced ingredients extracted from corn syrup.

The list includes at least five additives defined by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization as emulsifiers (propylene glycol esters, lactoglycerides, sodium acid pyrophosphate, mono- and diglycerides); four acidifiers (magnesium oxide, calcium fumarate, citric acid, sodium citrate); tocopherol, a natural preservative; and two ingredients — starch and maltodextrin — that were characterized as fillers by Dr. Gary A. Reineccius, a professor in the department of food science and nutrition at the University of Minnesota and an expert in food additives.” [NTY]

That is sheutload of sugar! Lots of carbs too, I reckon. Not healthy no matter how many calories it is.

Sounds delicious! I love “natural” taste, but kudos to their marketing departement.

i already have enough preservatives in my body from my childhood in the 60’s to ensure i can die and my untreated body can lie in the hot sun for four days and not smell.

    i don’t need this, thanks.
