My Afternoon With Fashion Designer Keith Lissner

[Getting fitted by Keith Lissner]

I have been fitted for dresses before, don’t get me wrong. Bridesmaids, prom, and the occasional dress that just needs a tweaking here and there. But, never has the actual designer of the dress I’m wearing PERSONALLY fit me for their creation. This is why, when Keith Lissner offered to for an event I will be attending, I felt like I was in a fairy tale. Keith’s gowns have draped everyone from Janet Jackson, to Charlize Theron, to New York socials like Paris Hilton and Leven Rambin…something I have to remember around him, a friend that is just as fantastic and beautiful as the clothes he creates. I knew, when he offered, that I was in for a treat, and was counting down the days until our fitting would take place. It turned out of course, to be everything you would imagine it would be.

Not only was I trying on different dresses and showcasing them for the maker himself, I was doing so in the actual design studio where they were conceptualized, with idea boards and fabric pieces sprung all over the place.

The phone rang halfway through my “fitting session.” Keith finds out he had just been accepted by the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Selection Committe for this years CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund! This is a big big deal, and, now I have the honor of saying I was with him when he found out. His official “good luck charm” is what he said, as he so generously gifted me an original masterpiece of a dress in gray ornamented in my favorite tulle trim that transports me back to my ballerina phase of childhood. I almost didn’t accept…this being too much of a gesture, but how could I resist really? When Keith is even more famous than he is now, (he’s also competing in the 53rd Annual Chicago Gold Coast Awards for Children’s Memorial Hospital…the same one that has hosted contestants such as Zac Posen, Dennis Basso, Philip Lim, Tory Burch and even Donna Karan), I will be able to send my daughter away in his dress for her 21st birthday party perhaps, and she may (at least for a minute) think that I may have been “cool” and “fashionable” once.
