[Guy Jacobson and Adi Ezroni at 'Holly' Screening event]

Go HERE for more photos from this screening by Porter Hovey.

Child sexploitation is (at least in my opinion), one of the most serious issues facing our world. Did you know that currently there are THOUSANDS of children in New York City alone that are being used as sex slaves?! Neither did I. And this is exactly what I told Guy Jacobson, director of Holly, in the cab ride to Mansion, where the after party for the film’s screening at the Quad was being held this Friday. “I mean I knew that some of those ‘massage ads’ in the back of Time Out NY were sketchy, but I never imagined that a child would be taken advantage of in this way blocks away from where I lived!”

Quin Browne[Quin Browne, blogging away]

Note from GofG: We have made quite a group of blogging friends here at GofG and, sometimes, get lucky enough to get a post out of them. Today, Quin Browne is here to share with us here experiences on moving to our great city and how “The moment I landed, I was able to announce, “ich bin ein New Yorker!”, because, let’s face it… you are or you aren’t. It doesn’t matter if you were born here or moved here … it’s in you or it isn’t.” Which is something we can whole-heartedly agree with….

“You never know where you’re going to land in life.”

Russell Simons, Jane Rosenthal

[Russell Simons and Jane Rosenthal at party for "Pray the Devil Back to Hell"]

Count me in!! So, last Thursday night was kind of a big deal for me….I stopped by Chinatown Brasserie’s Koi Lounge to check out the L’Oreal party for Pray the Devil Back to Hell, as part of the Tribeca Film Festival activities sponsored by Snapple Antioxidant Water and Belvedere.

I rolled passed the Koi pond and who did I spot: Jane Fonda!! I rushed past Russell Simmons and Donna Karan, to get a closer look at Jane. I couldn’t help myself, so I introduced myself to her – YES, it was a moment to behold. Out of all the amazing movies that she’s been in, I ended up complimenting her on Monster IN LAW!

cherry trees, The Brooklyn Botanic Garden

[The cherry trees are in full bloom!]

Go HERE for more photos from my adventure.

It’s not often that I get to spend a weekday afternoon frolicking about cherry trees. Which is why, when the opportunity presented itself to me this Thursday, I didn’t hesitate. The other GofG writers will, no doubt, be extremely proud of my bravery…heading out alone into the unknown depths of Brooklyn, for, what I hope is a trip that will become more frequent in the coming months for this egocentric Manhattanite.

“The best thing about this place is that the artwork is truly changing each moment. The artist’s canvas is never the same from one day to the next.”

-Explained my tour guide, (an award winning landscape designer), Leeann Lavin; director of public relations for the Garden, when talking about the uniqueness of this art medium.

DanniJo fakes

Lunchtime in Midtown doesn’t usually bring many surprises outside of luxury shopping, lunches with bigwigs, random acts of violence, and celeb run-ins (i.e. movie sets). But on today’s walk to the lunchtime salad joint, I had quite the surprise. There, on 53rd Street right outside of MoMA, sitting on a tapestry-sheathed aluminum table, were necklaces resembling, if not replicating, DanniJo’s Padme Collection. And something tells me they were selling for significantly less than the originals. So sorry, DanniJo! Here’s a consolation: your originals are 1000x cooler. And what is it that they say? Ah, yes. Ripping off your stuff and diluting your brand is the biggest compliment someone can pay you. That is, unless they pay you royalties.

Subscript Clothing Line

Subscript is a relatively new Williamsburg based clothing line of the urban/street variety. Their references range form early 90’s Andre Agassi/Nike designs to Iggy Pop. A quick glance at the company’s website reveals an affinity for mixed patterns, downtown revelry , and a longing for old New York, where one could ramble the streets burning funny cigarettes and yuppies hadn’t yet taken over Williamsburg. Colorful sportswear as suitable for skating and biking riding as it is for kicking it at the bar, a dirty dive bar, dominate the line.

Punk Rock Reunion
[Rocker]

Go HERE for more photos from this event by Etta Shon

Last night’s Morrison Hotel Gallery soiree featuring Bob Gruen’s classic, insider rock images from the heyday of punk was more Clash and Sex Pistols than chic and socialite, which is just the way we like it. The scene was a classic New York cross-section of wide-eyed, nubile young things and established, older rockers. In fact, some were even surprisingly well-preserved (Debbie Harry must eat the hearts of small children to look so good at 63). Bernadette Peters swooped in and ravaged the crowd with her trademark crimson tendrils while Dick Manitoba of the Dictators saw fit to grace us with his cooler-than-thou smile.

Post Boxes

Some may argue that perching upon Post Boxes warrants some sort of chastising, but for me, it is the quintessential harbinger of warmth. I just checked weather.com, things aren’t looking so sweet for the rest of the weekend, or the rest of the week—but today, let me urge you, as you weave your way back to whatever block on which you reside, to start scouting for good perch real estate. These spots get taken up quick. Mine’s in Prospect Park, just right of the Picnic House—good access to the bathrooms, but hidden in the shady trees. Trust me, your perch says a lot about your city steez. Don’t be found loitering over crowded park benches. Those are for tourists and corporate types to consume there Qdoba on.

texting around

Omfg, did u no r kids can’t write??? Apparently new data has been released that demonstrates how Web 2.0 is further devolving our ability to communicate and destroying our culture. No, it’s not because we substitute social networking sites for actual socializing, or because YouTube and blogs are ending life as we know it by sinking traditional media outlets. The Pew Internet and American Life Project found in their study that at least 64 percent of teens have used informal style while attempting to write formal school assignments—such as “LOL” style abbreviations or emoticons. (Emoticons! In a paper! Man, I wish I had tried to get away with that—sometimes nothing conveys what you mean quite like a =D ).

jasmin1.jpg

We’re more than a bit in awe of Jasmin Rosemberg. At twenty-three, the bubbly Brooklynite bunked Standard & Poor, landed herself a column at the New York Post chronicling her Hamptons share house experience, and lived to write the bacchanalian tale. A slew of reporting gigs and media spotlights ensued (Life & Style, BlackBook, Page Six, VH1), as did a novel, out June 25th. How the Other Half Hamptons reads like Animal House 2.0: The Hamptons, with all the delicious cultural references and sartorial digs its location necessitates. In our current SATC-crazed enviroment, we can’t help but draw comparisons to another, fictional NYC columnist, for while Rosemberg’s fashion sense may be a tad less eccentric, she’s just as endearing. We got the dish on Park Slope childhoods, old-school literary brat-packers, and what should be in every share houser’s suitcase.

You grew up in Park Slope during its neopreppification; what was that like?
Incredible! Park Slope to me is the best of both worlds: I grew up in an urban environment, where you didn’t need a car to pick up a gallon of milk and could hop the subway and be in the Village in 15 minutes, yet lived in a brownstone with a backyard and felt part of a quaint community. Still, Brooklyn always had such a stigma (in college, people would proudly tell me they’d been to Brooklyn “once” – to Peter Luger’s), so I’m pleased to see Park Slope finally recognized and growing.

[Phillip Bloch plays host at St. Jude's "A Night of a Thousand Lights Benefit"]

Go HERE for more photos from this event by Max Flatow

“Tonight we are all here for fashion.”

Err, not quite, Phillip Bloch; we’re here to benefit the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Center….but we’ll let it slide, mainly because you were such a gracious host to us, making all your guests feel part of the show. We love how you gave shout outs to your friends, people like Molly Sims, Dr. Ruth, and Iman. We absolutely loved the MARCHESA fashion show that followed, (the black and white feathered dress being our fav), and we will even over look the cold mac and cheese that the Butter counter was serving.
