Heading to Grand Central metro station yesterday, I walked past a hole-in-the-wall theatre where an afroed sista was handing out flyers. We realized we had some friends in common, Hanifah and Olive (of black-queer-womyn-artist-living-in-Brooklyn fame). I knew this chick was down, so I had to support. chashama, a non-profit theater based at 217 East 42nd (btw. 2nd and 3rd Avenues) is holding its first ever film festival. More»
Alexander Wang?s Uniqlo line is out today. I?ve been excited about this line because it?s probably the only chance I?ll have to say, ?My dress? Oh, it?s an Alexander Wang.? (Most likely I?ll offer this information regardless of whether I?m asked or not.) While his ready to wear dresses are normally around $650, the Uniqlo line ranges from around $49.50-$69.50.
Princeton Reunions bring a lot of old preppy dudes and some gals into Princeton for the annual alumni weekend of tents, picnics, banter, beer, beer, and more beer.
Our spy on the scene out in Jersey caught a couple of guys who have already started the celebrating in style. HOT!
Yesterday, I journeyed to Soho and went to Moss for the first time. Needless to say, the store put me in sensory overload. The two-floor gallery-esque store has an incredible amount of custom designed furniture and amenities, all done up in an unconventionally funky and intricate fashion. Some of the pieces are just absolutely incredible, ranging from 900 pound intimidating solid boudoirs to a set of plates with various facial expressions on them.
Well today marks the official opening of SATC around the country and people are REALLY getting into it. Many are discussing the appeal the movie will have among the male demographic. While some think that most men don?t care enough about the show/characters/movie to purchase their $12 ticket, the men in my life make me think twice. These men are the Stanfords, Skippers, and Mr. Bigs of this world, who relate to the male characters, those characters? experiences with our favorite females, and the urban environs they all enjoy. There are also men, like some fathers we know, who are see the women in their lives in the SATCfemales ? and secretly enjoy a cosmo at home every now and then.
Yesterday, all I ate was sandwiches...You may think that sounds repetitive, a bit lackluster for the palate, but the sandwiches I ate were as different as night and day. Lunch on the job was a hurried, pre-made, cold little thing at CafeMetro, clocking in at over $7. Don't get me wrong, I admire CafeMetro and the other "deli/luncheonette" type joints, catering to the suit-wearing, blackberry-carrying slew of midtown robots. Though, my sandwich was tasty equipped with the tiniest morsel of avocado (how I love them so!) and turkey (can I even call it turkey? it was more like turkey essence) it lacked the love of a human touch and at that price I feel like I should be full...Which brings me to dinner:

[Bob Bland in middle with models from Lookbook video]
Go HERE for more photos from the event by Antwan Duncan.
Bob Bland, the founder of Brooklyn Royalty hosted The Brooklyn Royalty Video Lookbook party at 3rd Ward last night. The video was upbeat, well edited, and full of sick outfits ...not to mention beautiful models.
Last night we went to the chic fun and funky House of Campari at 54 Crosby Street to check out Defining a Moment: 25 New York Artists ? an exhibit sponsored by the Campari Contemporary Art Program. Last night was opening night hosted by Paper Magazine and the Guggenheim?s Young Collectors Council with a special (and butt kicking) performance by the XYZ Affair. As you might have guessed, Campari WAS served at this event.
Its one thing to toast to an artist?s success with a glass of Campari, but it?s even better when you realize Campari is responsible for fostering the success of that artist through one of their various platforms to help emerging artists.

Around 8:30 this morning, the AP began reporting about ANOTHER crane collapse on the East Side, at 91st and 1st Avenue. This follows the crane collapse that killed seven people two months ago on 52nd and 2nd Avenue, which now leaves less confidence than ever with New York's adherence to construction codes, particularly on the East Side. (And the collapses seem to be creeping closer and closer to my apartment, which also does not inspire confidence with all the luxury condo buildings going up in the area, which was bad enough in guaranteeing the near-constant skull-numbing noise of jackhammering.)
Last night I had the opportunity to relive my undergrad years with dinner at one of the many fine Indian establishments on 6th and Second. It?s not that I went to college anywhere near Curry Row, or India, or anyplace even remotely resembling either. It?s just that nothing brings me back to undergrad more than economy travel to far off places; and that experiential simulation is exactly what Curry Row has to offer. In addition to feeling scrappy, young, adventurous and Bohemian, the small strip of Manhattan boasts three courses of slammin? Indian food for $8.95 ($4.95 for lunch), often with live sarangi and tablas to boot.

[Kenny Kenny working the Patricia Field's Door, photo via Jezebel]
I missed Patricia Field's party Wednesday night because I was over at Fingerpaint, and was a little bit bummed. After seeing this picture on Jezebel last night, I am even more upset. For some reason, which no one has yet been able to figure out (including myself), I have a strange fascination with the club kids...in particular, with Kenny Kenny. And girl was WORKING that door on Bowery last night! So, in fitting with Kenny Kenny making news this week, I will NOW (probably retardedly so), present you with my rendition of Kenny Kenny for Halloween this year:

I, for one, am loving the time warp back to the "90s. As I stated months ago, the 1990s are making a fierce comeback, and not just in the fashion world...even our billboards are screaming "Bring back the "90s! Bring back the "90s!" Remember Rush Limbaugh? Well, his show only lasted for four years (1992-1996), but has been living on since then behind the relevant billboards above the Toys "R Us store in Times Square. And, apparently the last couple of days, these Limbaugh ads have gotten another chance to shine in the sun.
Thank you to Curbed for pointing us to "90s billboard glory.

In 1938, at the height of the great depression, the world was introduced to the greatest hero of all time.
In 1982, at the height of Mary Hartney's post-partum depression, that character was introduced to the biggest, gayest nerd of all time.
In So I Like Superman, writer/performer/comic book nerd Michael Hartney tells the secret origin of his lifelong obsession with the Man of Steel, oddly mirroring the plot of Superman: The Movie.
You will believe a nerd can believe a man can fly.

Georg Friedrich Haas (performed by the Argento Chamber Ensemble) - ATTHIS Octet Version, no singer
In this piece, Haas sets to music Sappho's ancient and poetic declaration of love for her lover Atthis. The work, orchestrated for clarinet, bassoon, horn, and string quintet, is romantic in it's imagery, it's sense of suffering for love, and anxiety over separation, but as Haas himself describes: "This is unique in my works because it ends happily."

At Statue Garden, art meets the New York City nightlife. Inspired by artist Marina Abramovic's exhibit "The Artist is Present," Statue Garden challenges its guests to come to terms with sexuality, by populating an otherwise typical bar with male and female models wearing nothing but picture frames. Guests must navigate their feelings about such a display while simultaneously socializing with others. Statue Garden begs the question: How will they interact with each other given the abnormal sensuality of their surroundings?
Tickets are just $15 and that includes a complimentary vodka cocktail or white wine. For more information, please visit http://statuegarden.eventbrite.com/

Stones Throw Records CEO and hip-hop producer Peanut Butter Wolf may seem an odd choice to spin wax in between the acts on this experimental rock-ish bill, but there's more of a connection than one might assume. Within the last year or so, Leimert Park funk star Dâm-Funk, a Stones Throw act, became enamored with the swoony, groove-steeped tunes of Ramona Gonzalez, aka Nite Jewel, no doubt seeing her as a sort of artistic soul hermana. She too has a thing for the '80s, though her particular poison is a lo-fi swirl of hazy synth-pop, filtered new age and scuffed-up disco. She's got a new EP out called Am I Real, and the fresh-faced, aptly named local act Teen Inc. contributes to the titular track. Their style is decidedly dripping with the influence of Prince, but like Nite Jewel, they dress their adoration up in tons of warped-tape goodness. Heart Shaped Rock is another Ramona Gonzalez project, featuring songs written by Human Ear Music founder Jason Grier.
