beijing roads

Update from Beijing:

The roads are looking pretty barren these days in Beijing right before the Olympics as close to 90% of cars have been pulled off the road. Take the 8 lane Shunyi Roadway, close in size to the Long Island Expressway, and as you can see in the pictures there's pretty much no traffic at all! Wouldn't it be great if the LIE was like this on a Friday afternoon?

No doubt this will fill up as people come for the games, but in the meantime is a pretty interesting sight that mimics the likes of a ghost town.

lockheart steel, ben levanthal It seems yesterday's plea for the return of the Gridskipper of yore was unnecessary, though it did not fall on deaf ears. Both Lockhart Steele and Ben Leventhal assure us that "by fall you'll see a new plan in place, featuring more of the Gridskipper you loved restored, with, perhaps, a tweaked format and plenty of new material."

And that's not all; it turns out that the trademark maps will soon be showing up on the rest of the Curbed network's sites. I'm so relieved, and excited to see what the new maps (especially those on Racked) will look like!

It's shark week over at Plum TV and they have just given us the exclusive video. This one's short and definitely worth a watch. My favorite part: "Hurray- HU-RAAY"...now there's no 'hurray-hurray' we just let them go." I want to give God a high five for creating Frank Mundus, the legendary Montauk shark fisherman.

Okay, so I'm guessing he won't even remember spending that money in the morning, but that wasn't stopping him Saturday night at Pink Elephant, Capri.  What would really be fun would be to see what this guy was up to today....still nursing his weekend hangovers from out east in his cubicle in midtown?  Thank god he has a place to let loose!  File photo #2 below in "Why I stay away from clubs" category:

Wanna go home with the Kennedys? Well you had your chance at last Saturday's celebration at the East Hampton estate of Courtney Sale Ross. Such was the setting of a party to celebrate the inaugural event of the 40th annivesary of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial (founded the year of Senator Kennedy's assassination).  His wife Ethel was there along with some of his children.

BlackBook Magazine, Basil Hayden Bourbon, and Robert Verdi hosted the "Summer in Style" event at Kobe Beach Club last Saturday. Guests (who were quite fashionable I might add) at the soiree were treated to an array of delicious hors d'oeuvres such as lobster rolls, Kobe beef sliders, Kobe beef ravioli, mini crab cakes, bruschetta and salmon tartare while sipping delicious Basil Hayden cocktail concoctions and music by DJ Jesse Marco.

While I lived in Paris, Gawker's urbane travel site Gridskipper was my bible, a somewhat snarky, vastly knowledgeable guide to all things unFrommered. When I left, my brain was crammed not with french, but with the French, and where they allez-y-ed for the most tolerable free bar meals, scenic public sexcapades, sludgiest chocolat chaud... tidbits that I'd eagerly pass on to future expats. When I came back to New York, Gridskipper again rose to the occasion, though I relied on it less.

Sometimes it's best just to take it all in from the sidelines.  I can actually relate to this guy who is just fine playing watch dog thank you very much.  I do hope he took a couple twirls on the dance floor at Pink Elephant in Southampton.  Everyone knows you don't spend $2K on a table to SIT at it all night!

robert wilson's summer gala '08

"Art is total Propaganda"

Such were the words spread out like blood on the once-pristine white walls inside Robert Wilson's main building of the Watermill Center. The prolific German artist Jonathan Meese created the installation: Marlene Dietrich in Dr. No's Ludovico-Clinic (Dr. Baby's Erzland). And:

"transforming Wilson's pure design into a fantastic, ever-changing assemblage of cult, kitsch, and historical relics." [Watermill Center]

If this party is any kind of taste into the propaganda he is describing, consider me sold. It was, by far, the most interesting party I've been to this summer.

lilypond, east hamptpon

After the more subdued Blackbook party wrapped up, Lilypond in East Hampton continued on into the night on Saturday with it's usual debauchery. I actually had to drive past the place on my way home this night and, had I only known what was ensuing out back I may have....nah, I don't think I am prepared to handle it quite yet. These guys however? They came with their A-games and were more than prepared to be the special recipients of sparkle in a bottle.
