[Google Search trends for "Punta Del Este" show a healthy NYE interest]

Interest in a location can often point towards a travel trend.  And by interest, we mean Google searches.  Granted, in the past year some travel interest has waned because of the recession, nevertheless, the past 5 years offer some interesting insight.  Take for example Punta Del Este, which has emerged as a go-to travel destination during New Year’s for those looking to expand their horizons and avoid other the typical spots.  Once the “hamptons” for South Americans, it has ushered in many more foreign tourists including us “close-minded” Americans.  And rightly so, it has miles and miles of beautiful beaches, nightlife, and a sun that doesn’t set until at least 9pm at night.

After all, if you are going to travel thousands of miles, say from NYC to Miami, what’s the point if NYC follows you there?  Last January Miss Model Behavior made a trip to Punta and blogged her experience.  It’s a great read, and gives readers a nice insight into this gem.  That being said, what does the interest in some other spots during NYE look like?  We  decided to look at a couple of usual suspects, namely Gstaad, St. Barth’s, and South Beach to see what’s going on… More»

Mayor Bloomberg, Anna Wintour and Marc Jacobs Among the Highest Ranked on the New York Scene in 2008. Fashion and Local Scandals Dominate as Largest Drivers of Web Traffic and Online Trends on FameGame.com

ATTENTION: HIGHEST RANKED 2008

Top Attention Overall: Fashion and Politics Beat Out Society
In the wake of the economic meltdown, the New York media focused more on politicians and fashion moguls than the socialites and pseudo celebrities of years past. Mayor Bloomberg (1) takes the top spot, followed by Anna Wintour of Vogue (2), Derek Blasberg of Style.com and Women’s Wear Daily (3), socialite Fabiola Beracasa (4), designer Marc Jacobs (5), publicist Kristian Laliberte (6), Lindsay Lohan (7), Martha Stewart (8), socialite Emma Snowdon-Jones (9), and finally, Paris Hilton (10.) Other notables: Tinsley Mortimer (12), Calvin Klein (16), and the newest cast member of “Real Housewives of New York,” Kelly Killoren Bensimon (19.)

Top Fashion Designers: Social Designers Lead the Charge
Marc Jacobs (1) remains in the limelight with his constant party hopping, followed tightly by socialite-turned designer Tory Burch (2,) and the original wrap dress innovator Diane von Furstenberg (3). Zac Posen (5) and Peter Som (10) climb their way into the top 10. New York designers Cynthia Rowley (11) and Nicole Miller (12) just barely miss the top 10.

Top NY Politicos: New York Locals Win the Race, Scandal Propels Spitzer to New High
Mayor Bloomberg (1) takes the cake with the number one spot, followed closely by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (2), and Senator-Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton (3). Hillary Clinton’s husband Bill takes the number 5 spot, while Eliot Spitzer (6) rises to the top 10 in the wake of scandal.

No that is not Chris Crocker’s Britney Spears-inspired shrill. It’s me, and I really think people need to lay off these girls. As you are most likely aware at this point, the “Fabulous” Noel sisters, having danced in the social spotlight for the last several years, were thrown into the national spotlight when their father, Walter Noel, and his company Fairfield Greenwich Group (FGG) sent over 7 billion dollars to money heaven via its investment in Bernard Madoff. Making matters worse, four of the five sisters husbands worked at FGG and the family’s recent success was chronicled in several glossy publications over the last few years.

[Daniel Koch gets the champagne tower started. Photo via STEVEN EKEROVICH]

Last week we chronicled the Saturday brunch scene in Manhattan that has been exploding down in the meatpacking district.  And now we apparently have the numbers to prove it.  A tipster says that the Merkato 55 operation revenues have been on the trajectory of a champagne cork flying through the air (pre apex).

Having expanded to the second floor, they have been pulling in roughly 75k in revenue

Quite a pull for five hours or 300 minutes of fun.  So what might this mean over the period of a year?

Merry Christmas! From all of us at Guest of a Guest!

We will be back on Monday with all of our New Year’s coverage.  If you are looking for something to do in the meantime, browse around,  TAG YOURSELF and YOUR FRIENDS in our photo gallery, TIP STANLEY, and have yourself a Merry Little Christmas!

A military operation hasn’t been this fun since Operation Dumbo Drop back in 1995.  Started in 1947, Toys for Tots has been an ongoing success for many decades, dropping toys for needy little tots when Santa is too strung out to make their Christmas wishes come true.  Marines were out in battle fatigues in Times Square today near the Armed Forces recruiting kiosk loading up their massive supply truck with lots of fun toys for needy kids in the area.  A lot of little tots are going to have a special Christmas morning thanks to all those who contributed and the Marines who in addition to serving our country abroad make the country a better place at home. d
