[The Standard Grill. Photo via HC] If the Jane Ballroom is saving NYC Nightlife (in the West Village at least), what is The Standard doing for Meatpacking? André Balazs’ Standard Hotel was the city’s most anticipated opening of the year. Declared the Municipal Art Society’s Best New Building of 2009, and sitting on valuable real estate at the edge of the Highline, everyone was excited to start throwing their parties, and their pants off, at the newest hot spot.  The opening of the hotel’s restaurant, The Standard Grill, caused even more excitement, as things like this tend to do. Beyonce and Jay-Z, Anna Wintour, Rick Owens; these were just some of the faces spotted in the first weeks of the restaurant. Bruce Willis was doing a porny photoshot for W Magazine in the hotel before the beds were even installed. More»

After the death of Home and Guesthouse nightclubs on 27th street, there have been rumors today that Cain is the next club to go. Is it true?  With the success of the Surf Lodge (the Montauk hot spot that Jaime Mulholland and Jayma Cardosa opened only a year ago) and Goldbar, perhaps it was time to close down the venue that started it all? It seemed highly unlikely - the team just redid the entire space into “Cain Luxe” last spring. More»

[Foursquare's Dennis Crowley. Photos via RandomNightOut]. Last night, A Midsummer Night’s Obliterati offered a break from the dog days in the backyard of Sweet and Vicious. Enjoying Nolita’s warm summer evening with “Jargaritas,” or jugs of margaritas (what a wonderful idea), and some of new media’s usual suspects, the crowd smiled for the frequent and popular series event which always makes for a festive happy hour and break from, you know, the world. But how did it compare to Gawker’s rooftop party? More»

[Russell Brand was caught snorting cocaine while at a kid's soccer game in NYC for his film "Get Him To The Greek. Quote via Cedotal.]

Okay so this was actually a scene being filmed for Russell Brand’s latest “Get Him To The Greek,” but the images of the actor getting high on cocaine amidst dozens of kids high on only one thing- life- doesn’t seem too far off from reality.  “This is what you will look like if you do drugs, kids.”  Forget the DARE programs, our country should just consider getting this guy to go on tour and give the children a taste of what will happen to their soccer game should they even contemplate using uppers.

Socialitopoly. “Let’s face it: the Manhattan social scene is dead in the summer as country houses beckon, and the city’s fashionable people are bored during the week.” So says Vanity Fair’s Jessica Flint, as a selling point for playing Socialitopoly, the only Monopoly game that has properties like Surf Lodge, Rose Bar, and 740 Park Avenue as Properties. If you are sick of the Jane Ballroom (another property on the board) already, and have had more oysters at the Standard Grill More»

Kanye West[Kanye West. Photos by NICK HUNT for PMc]. Yes, you read that, correctly. We love all our little birds that give us good intel. Yesterday when we told you (you do subscribe to the newsletter, right?) that the hottest ticket in town was the Diesel:U:Music Tour, a free concert at Webster Hall, you may have been thinking that GofG was enjoying a little more than a smart afternoon cocktail at happy hour. Our die hards, though, didn’t blink. The loyalty paid off, as they spent less than a lucky penny to catch Kanye West and Clipse, and Lykke Li and The Roots live on stage, shocking and delighting fans with the surprise appearance. Kanye performed “Kinda Like A Big Deal” live for the first time, “detonating” (that’s a Foster Kamer quote btw) the music space, and the way the audience absolutely exploded is probably just as memorable as seeing this rhyme royalty up close and personal. If you were there with us, what an experience, right? If you missed it, there are many more only-in-New-York nights ahead of us. Still, this was a truly epic event. More»
