Night is my time for walking. I love to look for that glow of light that beckons from my intended destination; a movie premiere, a new restaurant, a new nightclub, an art gallery opening. As I approached the appropriately named Half Gallery, for painter Damon Johnson’s new show titled, “Thanks for Asking”, I noticed that only a slight glow could possibly escape from this tiny LES storefront. Also, apropos, their logo was done all in caps with the bottom halves of all the letters removed.
Never mind the size of the gallery, I had big expectations. Three clever people own the place; James Frey, the best selling author. Bill Powers, the former editor of Blackbook Magazine and Andy Spade, husband of handbag empress, Kate Spade. Plus, Damon is the son of the New York Post’s Page Six editor, Richard Johnson.

Life’s not always fair: Some people are good looking, popular AND talented. I consider contemporary artist David Foote to be one of those people. Strikingly handsome, amazingly talented and all of society’s most fun ones hang all over him (that’s if they are not already one of his muses for his works – New Girls!). Last night I found myself at the ultra-luxe 20 Pine residence downtown to view David Foote: (in) Res-i-dence collection in the Penthouse @ 20 Pine (presented by WHITEWALL Magazine, The Essence by Porsche Design and KWIAT). His art adorned the walls of the stylish penthouse as mobs of the typical PMc shutterlets crammed in to see it all.

Last Saturday, artist Laure Peugeot presented her large scale oil on canvas paintings and ceramic sculptures at Zev Starr-Tambor’s studio in Tribeca. Attendees were a mix of downtown types, visiting Parisians (some of whom flew in for the show) and a few lurkers from the Upper East Side. The paintings, detail images of flowers, painted on a large scale up to 6 feet by 7 feet, popped off the long brick walls of the studio. As a floral painter post-Georgia O’Keefe, it is a real challenge to do images in this style. Laure pulls it off with a slightly different perspective, and attention to detail. Her knowledge of color and flowing brush stroke make the strongest of the pieces stand out.

Answer: A celebration of Artist, Arthur Cohen’s latest works!
Last night at his artist studio and home apartment on West Broadway, Soho, the artist Arthur Cohen exhibited a number of large scale canvases where he had painted, with the use of oil paints, images focusing on Arthur’s relationship with a rather extraordinary Buddhist monk, who for Arthur functions as a sort of figure of atonement or exoneration.
Arthur Cohen is a New York painter with a long exhibition career. He has paintings in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum and the Dallas Museum of Art.
Guests were warmly welcomed by the artist himself and plenty champagne for all.
You’ve read about it in all of the gossip columns as well as the respectable press outlets. Now, it’s finally here. The world premiere of our friend Sean Glass’ latest short film, Benefits. It stars Brian Boulos, Byrdie Bell, Kristy Rao, Paul Johnson-Calderon, Stephanie Wei, Liam McMullan, Nicole Jacobs and Brad Woolf. This narrative short is showing at the Bushwick Film Festival on Sunday night August 24th. The attached brochure and flier say that it will be at 6:45pm, but Sean got it pushed back to 8:00pm so that all of you out in the Hamptons or wherever for the weekend have no excuse not to be there! It’s not an uptight festival like nyff later this week, it’s very low key, so bring anyone.

Cory Kennedy shot some photos for the Spring 2009 look book of Chrissie Miller’s line “Sophomore” at the new LOLA/Gin Lane Media office this week. Also shot were Jen Brill and Donald Cumming from The Virgins, by Cass Bird. Cory Kennedy, the real internet “IT” girl has taken the world by storm, it was only a matter of time until LOLA got their hands on this fresh talent. I myself can not wait to check out LOLA’s new digs.

Tyson Hall’s ‘Harlem Renaissance pt 1′ was the first of many Art exhibits soon to cover Harlem. The graffiti-like paintings are displayed at the shoe store “Head Over Heels” in Harlem. Tyson’s abstract images represent faces expressing unique and contrasting life images, views and opinions. Tyson boldly states that he enjoys seeing his work in a new environment: ‘it brings my images to life’
Andy Warhol may have missed his own 80th Birthday party at the New Museum last night, but the artist, who coined the phrase “15 minutes of fame”, would have no doubt seen the irony in this affair. Instead of doing our write up with who was there, what they wore, and what the party was like, etc. (which will come later), I would like to take this time to highlight the artist himself in this amazing video which was part II of an episode of “USA Arts”, from 1966, an NET production, profiles pop art pioneer Warhol (and Roy Lichtenstein, in part I), as he ascends in status in the art world and in popular culture.
This video consists of:
* Interviews with Warhol
* footage of him silkscreening in The Factory
* a clip from his film “The 13 Most Beautiful Women” (1964)
* an interview with Edie Sedgwick
* Warhol assembling his mylar balloon ‘paintings’ as the Velvet Underground play “Venus in Furs” (starts at 14:00)
* Factory regulars dance
