Colors Galore At The Nike Store In Beijing

[Gold medalist tennis player Rafael Nadal is GOLD literally!]
The shoes in the Nike store in Beijing are pretty awesome. A large colorful selection of kicks that is sure to satisfy whatever color preference you might have. In addition, the life-sized pictures of athletes including Rafael Nadal are part of the whole Olympic theme the store has adopted for the Games.

China Doll Nightclub Serves Up Bottles Olympic Style
Beijing’s swanky boite, China Doll is proving to be quite the watering-hole these days. With the Olympics in full swing, the already pert and posh crowd is now laced with the likes of Michael Phelps and beauties from the Greek water polo squad, to name a few.
More pictures HERE.
True to China’s penchant for pushing design and architectural limits (think Terminal 3, CCTV’s cantilevered building, The Bird’s Nest, etc.), China Doll is an exercise in interior design. More »

Never Trust A Cabbie With White Gloves
Why? Because this guy couldn’t seem to get directions right, no matter what I tried! In addition to that, he laughed maniacally at pretty much everything I said. Not sure what was so funny, but eventually I started just laughing each time he laughed, and we continued this back and forth for about 10 minutes. So I guess laughter is contagious. That being said, the white gloves is a pretty slick look, don’t you think?

Michael Phelps Has Strong Swimmers
Everyone in the world wants to know about Michael Phelps right now. What he’s wearing, where he’s eating, who he’s dating….Some advice to the girls that he may woo in the future:
Those girls better be careful. I’ve been hearing a lot about Phelps having some pretty strong swimmers. Or something like that. [Comment on Gawker by Valerie Flame]

Michael Phelps At China Doll Nightclub In Beijing
After his amazing performance at the Olympics, Michael Phelps is doing, well, what anyone in his place would be doing, he’s living it up! Last night he went to China Doll, a new spot in Beijing, where he was being fawned over by a bevy of broads and admiring fans. And his rumored possible romances, U.S. swimmer Amanda Beard or British fashion model Lily Donalson were nowhere in sight…
Expect more info from this club, the current “hot spot” of Beijing later today.

Ni Hao from Beijing: The Great Wall
Go Here for more pictures by Chris Confessore
Luckily , the day opened with clear, bright skies for my trip to the Great Wall. To avoid the crowds at the Beijing sections of the Wall, we headed to the mountainous region north of the city, to the section of Wall at Simatai. Located about 75 miles from Beijing, Simatai is the section farthest from the city, and is one of the few to retain the original features of the Ming Dynasty. Running along the peaks of the Yanshan Mountains, it is also the highest section; the Wangjinglou Tower at the summit reaches a height of 3,281 feet, and on a clear night you can see the lights of Beijing. To build at such precarious heights, goats had to be used to haul up the bricks, one at a time.

What The Chinese Think Americans Like To Eat And A Case For Capitalism
[Via Nick Confessore]:
“Let’s talk about the most screwed up part of the Olympics: The concessions. The food sucks, big time. It’s like an amalgam of what Chinese people think Americans and Europeans like to eat — Vienna sausages stuck in sweet rolls with cheese, that sort of thing. An A for effort, an F for final product.

Ni Hao From Beijing: The Forbidden City
Go Here for many more photos
On our next non-competition day, we got to visit the Forbidden City and Tian’an Men Square, which are at the very center of Beijing. Officially known now as the Palace Museum, the complex housed both the government and the private residences of the Imperial Court for over 600 years. There are 800 residences, temples, courtyards, offices, and plazas covering 178 acres. The day began gray and hazy again. By the time we arrived at the Forbidden City, it had begun to rain pretty hard, but we couldn’t pass up a chance to explore this impressive site:

Ni Hao From Beijing: Wangfujing
GO HERE for more pictures
Having gotten my feet wet (literally) walking around Beijing, my group decided that we would use our last completely free day before the rowing competition kicked off to get an early head start on all of the gifts we would need to bring back (and of course a few things for ourselves). In Beijing, the first stops on that journey are the Silk Market and The Hongqiao Pearl Market. Though you can get pearls and silk at both (custom jewelry and tailoring too), there is much, much more to be found. These markets have evolved from public squares to multi-story edifices of commerce.
