What does Adrien Grenier do when he’s not playing lackadaisical Hollywood supernova Vince on HBO’s super successful, fantastical TV show ‘Entourage’? If you guessed drum in a fairly generic alt-rock band called the Honey Brothers, then high marks and a smiley face for you today, ’cause you’re absolutely right.

The Honey Brothers‘ will be performing this Saturday at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg.

five leavesHeath Ledgers’ Bar “Five Leaves” has just opened up in Brooklyn.  Urbandaddy has the scoop:

First, the designer is the man behind such barroom favorites as Moto, Smith and Mills and Tailor, so you’ll notice the same attention to detail, handcrafted look and hint of cool about the place. The end effect is a bar that Thomas Edison might have built for his buddies.

It’s all meant to be a super casual California- and Australia-tinged cafe, coffeehouse and oyster bar, with greenmarket snacks like Sliced Radishes on Toast with Evans Farmhouse Butter. And starting with tonight’s friends and family opening party, you’ll probably see a few famous faces amongst the Billyburg faithful.

Five Leaves, 18 Bedford Ave (at Lorimer and Nassau), Brooklyn

From our tip line:

Greenpoint based rock band semi-precious-weapons get kicked out of their loft!

In the video above, Justin Tranter of Semi Precious Weapons shows his eviction notice. The famous fabulous SPW rockNroll loft is being turned into offices for the sewage plant next door.

WILCOI am consistently blown away by any live Wilco performance. Last night’s show at McCarren Park was no exception - a gorgeous evening with a nice breeze, standing but a few meters away from the stage where Jeff Tweedy in his stylin’ lime green blazer was clearly in my line of vision - who could ask for a more serene and blissful August evening?

nick drakes\' five leaves leftFrom Anonymous commenter today on our Five Leaves post:

“I don’t think Heath rolled Swans… however he had stated that his favourite artist was a man by the name of Nick Drake whom had a album named “Five Leaves Left.” That most likely is how the name came about. Anyhow I’m sure the bar will be incredible and is a great way to remember a great actor.”

Maybe DBTH was wrong about where the name came from….but he did go all the way across the river to snatch the pictures for us (that he is so adamant about us crediting).  In any event, we agree that the place will most likely be a good way to remember the great actor.

The Five LeavesThere’s a new bar on the watch list. The corner of Lorimer and Bedford, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is set to be home of “The Five Leaves”, a bar that will be opened by one of Heath Ledger’s good friends. In fact, Ledger was a “key backer of the project and was going to be a full partner.” (From “Heath Ledger’s Final Act.”):

His untimely death put the project in jeopardy, but his father became executor of the estate, and because he knew how much the project meant to Heath, he released the funds to finish construction. The name Five Leaves is a working name, and comes from Swan cigarette papers that tell you when there are just five left in a package. [DBTH]

For those who read this blog that are not of the Hampton’s variety, or, are of the Hampton’s variety and believe in voting for change, and are willing to give up a beach day, save you 2K, and just fork over 2-tens ($20 that is) in honor of Barack Obama. The “Ba-ROCK Brooklyn Festival” will feature 18 bands including Backwords, Apollo Heights, and Broken Trees… and that’s before the 5 independent films, free love, and politically charged youth.

shel silverstein tattoo

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

Ronnie Specktor was at McCarren Pool last week and Antwan was there to capture the fun.  My favorite photo of the batch was the “Where the Sidewalk Ends” tattoo in reference to that awesome Shel Silverstein book that I so adored as a child.  I am generally turned off by tattoos of any sort, but this one made me smile.

Spoon the BandSpoon’s serving up their brand of delectable grooves tonight at the Prospect Park Bandshell. The band’s latest release, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, is a bunch of good, fun songs often about shenanigans, e.g. “You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb,” and, since it’s pretty bare bones as far as instruments go (mainly the big 3: drums, guitar, bass, to go along with Britt Daniel’s scratchy croon), it’ll sound just as great live. The show starts at 6:30.

DjDeity is a new club, and instead of the conspicuous lights, velvet ropes and burly bouncers of so many night spots, Deity’s facade is more like a breath of gothic fresh air in downtown Brooklyn.

Open since February, Deity, which is actually housed in the shell of what used to be a house of worship, (ala Limelight) is finding its stride and putting on a weekly party called Bi-Polar.
