In case you missed it, today is Fat Tuesday! (Also knows as Pancake or Shrove Day). So, whether you’re munching on Mac ‘n Cheese with Graydon Carter, Eating Eclairs with Chuck Bass, or Chowing on Chicken that’s been fried by Blue Ribbon’s specialists with me, we hope you stuff yourself up! Because Fat Tuesday only happens ONCE a year, and that is cause for celebration! In case you need some motivation, here are the top parties (all you can eat/drink specials) going on tonight in NYC. Or, you could just hit up your local Olive Garden/TGIF’s buffet.

“If you can dream it you can do it.” -Walt Disney. As we all wait one more day to see our 44th president sworn into office, it is especially appropriate to reflect on the power of dreaming.
“I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today. More»

Sunday night, the Eldridge played host to a fundraising night for Make A Difference NYC, an organization that donates toys to underserviced children living in orphanages and homeless shelters. Guests came bearing toy donations, and stayed for a silent charity benefit auction, bidding on such items as Rangers tickets, David Yurman and Lia Sophia jewelry, and more. Camille Guaty and Will Forte were the official hosts for the evening, and DJ Mel DeBarge took care of the sound, while guests like Rachel Dratch, Kelly Brady, and Amber Lee Ettinger (remember her?!) came out to party for a cause.

Last night, Valentino and Vogue co-hosted a holiday event sponsored by the Museum of Natural History. All manner of New York boys and girls about town showed up, including Arden Wohl, Derek Blasberg, Richie Rich, Melissa Berkelhammer, Tracey Stern, Claire Bernard, and Jules Kirby. The party was a veritable feast of festive and gorgeous fashions.

Unsure of what to get your funky “don’t-call-me-a-hipster” hipster friend/significant other for the holidays this year? This “Colour-in Wallpaper” by illustrater Jon Burgerman is sure to have them using adjectives like “sick” when they open it. Get it HERE.

This weekend will be the biggest one for celebrators of Oktoberfest. A company called PubClub gets in the spirit with their party buses in Huntington Beach. For only $20 you can join “about a thousand other crazies enjoying massive beers, brats and an “oompha band”…the wildest times occur during the repeated playing of the Chicken Dance.” Sounds like a blast.

Simplify your life, all you need is a nice cotton white dress and a sweater to carry you through the weekend. Persian rugs thrown on grass are a great way to encourage story telling at dusk. Get in the ocean every chance you get, it is the BEST way to start your day, and the only thing you should be concerned about doing until at least noon. Be Silly. Don’t forget to look up at the stars, it’s not everyday you get to see the milky way. Go to events if they suit you, if they don’t, forget about it…there is no use fretting over how to spend your time on Labor Day weekend. Remember: You. have. nothing. to. do. Repeat this over and over until it gets good and set in.

It’s weird but I have a distinct memory of the first time I felt “Patriotic”. I had our nations forefathers’ looking down on me. Literally. I was in Mount Rushmore with my family. I must have been around 7 and, up until then, had heard people speak of being patriotic and nodded confidently in agreement without having a clue what that word meant.
I am as American as they get. My childhood vocabulary included words like “road trips, ’smores, slip n slides, Oreos, Tang, Dillards, Shopko, Council Bluffs, Pogs, John Deeres, Swanson Trucks and Dairy Queens.” Milan and Barcelona were only places I read about in my hard covered Encyclopedia Britannicas and could as well have been Jupiter. My blood lines are a hodgepodge of Czech Republic, France, Sweeden, German, Bohemia, and probably a dozen others. I say words like “hodgepodge” also, “pop” (soda) and “hoss” (as in that Range Rover was a “hoss” of a ride). And I get excited at the thought of eating hot dogs with burnt grill marks on them.
So while some are insisting we have nothing to be celebrating today, and others are staying home counting their baseball cards, I am celebrating being American in every way I know how. (I’m even sprawled out on the couch right now-have been so for hours). Then, like musicmaven, I’m going to have some fried chicken, homemade ice cream and a whole bunch of Miller Lites before I sit back and enjoy an hour’s worth of imported fireworks.
