Bob Dylan’s “Positively 4th Street” is one of the greatest musical take-downs of all time. And although time and Victoria’s Secret commercials may have softened the icon, Dylan is sure to put on a great show tonight about 171 blocks from his old Village stomping grounds at the United Palace Theater in Washington Heights. Remember that rush you’d feel when driving with the radio on and you’d hear four, five, holy crap six kickass songs in a row? Thanks to iPods, Clear Channel and niche satellite stations, the spontaneous thrills of FM radio seem close to joining local newspapers and scripted network TV in the media graveyard. Radio will suffer another sad casualty tonight when local dance station Pulse 87 leaves the airways. More»
Yesterday, Billy put together this handy dandy post for you novices out there who would might need a CMJ 101 class. Today, I noticed the insane amount of Twitter activity coming from #CMJ lovers. Music and tech geeks sometimes seem to be clones of each other (both tend to take on hipster diets), so it’s no surprise that this festival would have a prominent number of tweeters and bloggers chronicling it. Click below for some of the more prolific twitter accounts to follow if you are looking for up to date info on the shows.. More»
Pop rockers, The Fray took on the stage last week at Tribeca’s P.C. Richard & Son Theater stirring their fans into a frenzy as they performed for the packed house of youngsters as part of an event benefiting MusiCares, a foundation focused on musicians in need. After there set, the boys greeted the front row with markers in hand autographing just about anything the crowd had to offer. We’re pretty sure this girl is going to hold off on washing her right arm for awhile. More»
All Tomorrow’s Parties (ATP) hosted their New York 2009 concert cramming a line up of bands into a no-fuss weekend of partying for hundreds of indie music-loving New Yorkers who turned it into the kind of event you either wish every music festival was just like, or into your idea of a hipster-crowded nightmare. This weekend the Electric Zoo took over Randall’s Island Park. Showcasing electronic music, the open air festival brought out many an inner wild animal. With four stages and over 50 artists including DJ Steve Aoki, David Guette and ATB as just a glimpse; the East River trail linking Manhattan and Queens was bustling with the beats, a crazy energy in contrast to the setting of 24 calm, grass acres. Concert goers either huddled on blankets or crowded up to the stage to take in three days of the genre’s best. More»
Sir Richard Branson, the eccentric billionaire founder of Virgin, was a more than an entertaining host for the Virgin Mobile Free Fest in Columbia, Maryland. In between acting as bartender, spraying the audience with booze and enjoying a cold one himself; the international big kid presided over the cost free concert supporting Re*Generation to fight youth homelessness. As Lollapalooza, the three-day music festival held at Grant Park in Chicago, wrapped up this weekend, the energy was still pumping despite the balmy 87 degree heat on Sunday. With performances by Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, The Killers, Silversun Pickups, Lou Reed and many more, the final day was the perfect ending to the raging festival. More photos below… More»
[Fans waiting to see Arctic Monkeys at All Points West. Photos by Ben Hider for Flavorpill]. This year’s band line-up for All Points West, the biggest and loudest three-day music festival to hit the tri-state area in years, was nothing less than jaw-dropping when it was first announced months ago. With performers like the Beastie-Boys, MGMT, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Crystal Castles and Coldplay all in the same weekend, the festival was destined for Indie greatness and by all means lived up to the hype. We don’t mean to tease, but we can’t resist giving you another little taste of the dramatic stage presence at All Points West. Jay-Z stole the show with his Friday set, proving that being a major label executive and doing the whole married thing is certainly not about to weigh on his ability to rock the crowd. Even if we hadn’t caught the raps and rhymes, the look on Jigga Man’s face, alone (and the man is wearing sunglasses, mind you), is probably enough to keep us spellbound. Stay tuned for full coverage, coming soon.
