Socializing At Southside: Hey Mr. DJ!

[James Willis shows off new DJ booth at Southside]

Leading up to the highly anticipated opening of Southside in the basement of Martignetti’s on Broome Street we will share another tease with you: the DJ Booth.

The DJ Booth at Bella’s was always the site of much unnecessary nightlife drama, and we were all wondering what the new one was going to look like.  This photo is about 30% of the full picture…because games are fun, we purposely have cropped the photo so as to leave you guessing about where it sits (HINT: it’s moved on from the stair case by the bar).  You also get a taste of the decor… palm trees and a molded ceiling.  There is so much more to come from Southside this week. Stay tuned.

“Best $2k I Ever Spent!” Le Royale

[All photos by Nicky Digital]

They may be all dressed in black, but there’s nothing but shinning happy love from these hip young things at Le Royale on Sept. 26th.  Robot Rock was in town, featuring Nick Hook (Men Women & Childrien), Daryl Palumbo (head Automatica), Kid Indie and more.  Located at 21 seventh avenue in the village, this spot is close enough to NYU to waste the night away before those morning classes for much less than $2k.

The Plumm Is Still Around, Manages To “Score” The “Godfather Of Harlem”, The Real American Gangster

[Frank Lucas Jr. in middle]

Last Thursday was quite the evening. After venturing to David Foote’s fabulous art opening, I did a complete 180 and went to The Plumm on 14th street for Frank Lucas, Jr.’s single release party. Frank Lucas Jr. happens to be the son of the “American Gangster” (of Denzel Washington fame), Frank Lucas Sr. The venue was packed by 9:00 PM, and all heads were turned when Frank Lucas (wheelchair and entourage in tow) was escorted into a VIP section after stepping out of his classic 1940’s Cadillac limo. Sundays Are The New Saturdays

DJ Nick Cohen at "Spandex Sundays"

DJ Nick Cohen at "Spandex Sundays"

DJ Nick Cohen gets it:

Why Sunday night is the hottest night of the week:

  • You can carry your buzz from brunch (from the Bloody Mary you downed to try and get rid of your Saturday night hangover) into the early evening and switch over to wine/cocktails around 8pm with a solid level of non sobriety.
  • Calories? What calories? No one counts on Sunday. Pass the steak and pomme frites.
  • Zero B&T.  Guido watching paired with Euro watching is always fun, but, you will get your fill during your brunch hours…when Sunday NIGHT sneaks her way in, they scatter to the calls of Monday morning train rides and lattes.

Chloe Is The New Beatrice Inn

Chloe, in the original Greek Χλοη, means “Blooming”.  A fitting name for the LES’s newest secret spot that Daniel Maurer just wrote about, calling her “The First Good Nightlife Thing In A While“.  In his post on Grub Street, he anoints Chloe as the “New Beatrice Inn”.  This sounds strikingly similar to the blurb I wrote about Chloe days before in our “New York Is Not Dead” piece in which we told you where the cool kids were:

Chloe. This little gem is flying under radar from most of the online world, though it’s creating a lot of buzz amongst the very hippest of our Guests.  It’s below the French restaurant Casanis at 81 Ludlow (@Broome).  Shecky’s deems it a “worthy substitute for the crowd displaced by the revamping of Bella’s at Bar Martignetti’s” but we hear it’s the Beatrice Inn regulars that have OD’d on Bea who are sprouting up at Chloe. Go now before it catches on and before you know it, she shows up.

Disco Doesn’t Make The Door List, NY Mag Staff Will Continue To Get The Dreaded “Sorry I Can’t Let You In Tonight”

[Disco gards the door at Bungalow. Photo by NYMag]

Today’s NY Magazine includes the “Say-Up-Till-Dawn Nightlife Planner” inside of it.  This is the photo for the section titled “Top Five Doors Worth The Hassle. The velvet ropes are justified here”.  It is our good friend Disco holding down the fort outside of our beloved Bungalow 8.  However, there is an immediate and obvious problem with this choice of photo….Bungalow isn’t included on the list that follows it (205 Club, Beatrice Inn, Goldbar, Rose Bar, and Socialista are).  Disco’s door is perhaps the most obvious and recognized one, so maybe it is fitting to use as the main photo, it would just be nice to see the place return on the list.  Are our revival efforts futile?

Alas, for future reading, check out the magazine and read their picks for best bars around the city.  Go HERE for ours.

Socializing At Southside: Let The Party Begin

The Martignetti brothers

The Martignetti brothers (Anthony and Tom)

DBTH likes to be in the know about the city’s hot, new places.  It’s his job.  He’s just not very good at actually SOCIALIZING at said hot spots.  Which is why you will only get half of the story from him.  Today he posts on Southside, the new spot breathing life into Bella’s corpse. It’s titled “Previews at Southside“, which is ironic considering he has yet to see the place, and offers zero preview(s).  I, having actually BEEN there Saturday night for its FIRST private party, can tell you that it would knock his socks off, should he ever happen to emerge from his basement and his baseball cards.  Last night, the party they threw was for Mickey Avalon and took place after his concert, which I missed because I was still recovering from an open bar Saturday. “Best $2k I Ever Spent!” Home Sweet Home Serves Kegs

Aww the keg stand.  Always good for turning an otherwise boring party in a basement into a smashing success.  Also, has the ability to bring grown men back to their carefree college days when the only thing they had to worry about was who they were going to copy their Spanish homework from the next day.

Home Sweet Home, on Chrystie street (near Delancy) in fact, looks strikingly similar to one of the houses I used to party in near Creighton U.  And according to Daniel Maurer: “On Tuesdays, the spillover crowd from Happy Ending’s long-running Shit Hammered party can be as freaky as the trinkets.I don’t want to be overly critical here, but that carpet?, probably not the best idea for the bar you opened that serves up the sort of characters below.  Raunchy.  I have to go of course. And soon.

Bringing Back Bungalow 8: Zelda’s Reign

[Zelda's Bday thrown by Patrick McMullan. Photos by PMc]

In continuing with our Bungalow 8 revival, we decided to re-post on our favorite character from the place, Zelda. Zelda has come up in more than one memory email regarding Bungalow.  Lohan, Paris, Spears….all amateurs, none come close to competing with the reign of Zelda Kaplan, New York City’s 91 year old party-girl. She’s also a socialite, humanitarian, designer, seamstress, and most reliable promoter around. From Sacco to Mulholland, everyone that’s anyone wants to have Zelda at their party. And chances are she will be there at least once during the week. Talk about an empire, this woman’s presence is downright magical.

While the other girls are trying to get Patrick McMullan to document their birthday parties, Zelda is having hers actually THROWN by the guy (her latest one is pictured above). Village Voice editors spent one night with her and literally couldn’t keep up. More »

“Best $2k I Ever Spent!” Pink Elephant Taking Care Of It’s Wall Street Clientele

Forget the crisis on Wall Street, Pink Elephant is here for you ex-bankers.  This answers our question about the fate of our city’s clubs.  27th street looked to be alive and well on September 25th.  Brings back memories of confetti driven comas.

Secrets, Secrets Are No Fun, Until You Share Them With Someone

[The bookcase leading to bar at The Back Room. Photo via NY Mag]

There was a time (a year ago) when secret or hidden bars/restaurants were all the rage. Places like PDT (Please Don’t Tell) on St. Marks, in which guests have to go through hot dog joint Crif Dogs, pick up a pay phone and push a button in order to get buzzed through the secret door; and The Back Room at 102 Norfolk whose marker was a LES toy shop two doors down. La Esquina and Milk & Honey have been “secrets” for years, Upstairs, Freeman’s and subMercer have opened in the last year… but the “secret” has worn off.

In a city that never sleeps, there are secrets lurking around every corner, and in almost every night spot.  (Think the little porn room at PopBurger or the secret keys given to VIPs of Apotheke).
