Christine Cho Breaks News When She Actually EATS At The Hearst Cafeteria

I am always looking for new places to lunch, it being my favorite meal of the day. Yesterday I had the pleasure of eating at the Hearst Corporation’s cafeteria and the selections were actually impressive. No Lydia or Gillian sightings to report.  There was the obvious grill, wrap, and and salad station. Digital menu listing the days specials. Sushi chefs in their corner making maki’s to order.

But what caught my eye were the salads showcasing the mushroom festival going on right now. There were chanterelles, oysters, shitakes, and bluefoots. I tried them all and it was shocking at how balanced and creative these dishes were. I’m in a cafeteria mind you.

El Teddy’s, The Epitome Of “Downtown Cool”

[via Wired news]

Before there was La Esquina, or Barrio Chino, there was El Teddy’s. The famous TriBeCa restaurant on West Broadway near Varick Street was an inspiration for the cast of Saturday Night Live (its crown appeared on the opening credits for years), and many others.  Its long and curious history dates back to the 1920s.  It has seen various reincarnations; from its original steakhouse design, frequented by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, to a tapas bar in the 80s where it was crowned with its landmark 2,500 pound replica of the Statue of Liberty by artist Antoni Miralda, to the Mexican hotspot most of you would know it best as, owned by Christopher Chesnutt.

Secrets From “Mr. Blue Ribbon”

[Former Raw Bar Veteran Johnny D at Blue Ribbon Bar. Photo via NYMag]

The past couple of weeks have been a whine-fest of New York writers lamenting the end to nightlife in our city.  Well boo-hoo.  I’ve been over the club scene for awhile now. And tomorrow, I will unleash upon the world wide web, an extensively researched list of the under radar places to go after dark.  I have drawn upon a wealth of sources the last two days and am excited to culminate my findings into one big report for you.  True, it may mean the end for a few of these places, but the really sound ones will weather what little storm that I may cause, I assure you.  Before this happens, I would like to take the time to get one of my favorite places out of the way, a place whose greatness is no secret, and who will be celebrating it’s sweet sixteen this year: Blue Ribbon.

In order to do the place it’s justice, and provide you with the best of the best insider information, I had to contact MR BLUE RIBBON himself, a fan that has spent over a decade calling the little place on Sullivan Street his second home.

Everything You Need To Know About Blue Ribbon That You Won’t Find On A Food Blog:

  1. Blue Ribbon always draws a most eclectic crowd. From local foodies, to off-shift chefs, to hip hop impresarios…you need to play along.  Bring a crowd of 5 or more for a reservation, and make it some interesting folks…the place is too special for average dining room chit chatter and bores.
  2. If you are under 5 you will need to wait at the bar. And so, a whole new set of tips: always ask if they have ruby red shrimp at the raw bar, they only have them once in a while but they’re spectacular. Talk to James. He likes skiing in Colorado and baseball.

Will Lavo Do As Much Revenue As Tao Las Vegas?

Many of you may remember reading the NYTimes piece a year or so ago that examined the massive revenue of Tao Las Vegas, which at the time was cranking out a whopping $55 million dollars.  Such “vibe dining” is of course fueled by the massive 10,000 square foot night club component run by none other than Noah Tepperberg’s Strategic Group.  Noah and his pal Rich Thomas have perfected nightclub “stratification” (i.e. bottle service) both in Vegas and New York, taking clubs from semi-professional shady outfits into the legitimate investments we see today in the form of places like Marquee.

So with their newest iteration Lavo, it leaves us guessing for now at least, how much these guys are going to squeeze out of the new space and the pockets of eager club-goers? More »

Here Piggy, Piggy! Il Buco’s Sagra de Maiale Satisfies Us Porkers

Go Here for more pictures from this event.

Yesterday, we stopped by Il Buco’s Sagra de Maiale. The crowd started lining up before 1pm, stretching down Bond street onto the ever popular Bowery, for their annual Pork Festival. Luckily the sweet pork smell calmed the crowd’s nerves, and the approach to the feast was calm and orderly.  After a run through the groaning serving table, the crowd spread out along the outside tables and benches. The seating inside and out allowed for a rotation of new friends to be made over all the salty, sweet, tangy goodness (I’ll admit, I had seconds).

Clemente’s Maryland Crabhouse, A Taste Of The Hamptons In Brooklyn

crabFrom a concerned reader:

“Summer Days are officially over and so are evenings spent at Hampton’s ledgendary Lobster Inn. For those craving their fresh seafood (or “Splat” to be specific), here is somewhere that might satisfy your cravings. Take a ride to Sheepshead Bay for Clemente’s Maryland Crabhouse in Brooklyn. The best thing is their “All You Can Eat Buckets of Crab” seasoned with garlic or Old Bay Seasoning. You’ll be equipped with a bib, cracker, mallet and lots of paper towel. Go now while the weather is warm and dine al fresco. Just a word of advise from someone who is there all the time … read up on the proper way of de-shelling a crab or else you’d leave with cuts on your fingers from pulling and tugging on the shells. :-)”

Double Crown To Further Colonize The “Never-Hotter” Bowery Street

double crown
[Via Urban Daddy]

“Opening tomorrow from AvroKo (the folks behind Public and the Stanton Social) is Double Crown, further colonizing the never-hotter Bowery. The lively front room feels like the perfect summer patio brought inside: a huge, lofty space with exposed brick walls, unfinished wooden tables and a veritable indoor garden. The bar extends into a communal table perfect for the party, but if you’re looking for dinner a deux, squirrel her away to the set-off back with white-paneled walls and a more intimate feel.”

Right down the street from the GofG offices, we are excited to check out Double Crown, opening tomorrow.  Stay tuned on our full report this week.

Todd English Wanted For Reality Dating Show

The Libertine
[Todd English latest project: "The Libertine". Photo by Eater]

Our favorite foodie Christine Cho has connections to some of the top chefs and culinary experts in the world.  Now, it seems people are catching on to this.  A recent email sent to Christine:

Dear Christine,

I have read your work. I know that you are a lover of all things culinary including Todd English. My name is [Redacted]  and I ama writers assistant to award winning Hollywood Producer and filmmaker [Redacted] here in Los Angeles.

We recently pitched our agency on a reality dating show concept for Todd English. They loved the idea and we were strongly advised to reach him direct to avoid the delays, blocks and red-tape that can come from going through managers and agencies.

Graydon Carter’s Ye Old Waverly Inn Blog, Old And Wavering (Defunct)

Graydon CarterYou would think that with a constant flow of celebs, moguls, impressarios, etc. that Graydon Carter’s power dining spot, Ye Old Waverly Inn, would have constant fodder to blog about.  Or so it seemed when Carter first launched the Waverly Inn blog in January of this year.  But what may have seemed at first a brilliant way to shill for the spot in hindsight looks to be an ill-conceived project at best.  The blog hasn’t been posted on since May 21st of this year.

For starters it appears to be a serious conflict of interest.  Sure Graydon isn’t running for public office, but as an editor, to use Vanity Fair’s resources to publicize a personal investment doesn’t ring quite right, similiar to the distaste of paying $65 dollars for a plate of mac and cheese.  Even if it’s not him doing the actual writing, the effect and intent is the same. Did Serena Get The $65 Dollar Mac and Cheese At Waverly?

Macaroni and Cheese Waverly Inn

The Mac + Cheese Is $30, the truffles make it $65

So I think we’ve solved it.  The Mac and Cheese.  Could this be the secret that Serena Williams is counting on for success tonight when she goes up against Venus?  We’ll never know, but one thing we do know: you won’t find this on the defunct Ye Old Waverly Inn shill-blog. They haven’t had a post on it since the 21st of May!

More importantly, you won’t find any other beer than Heineken at the Inn.  Not sure what Graydon Carter was thinking there….
