Patrick Moberg won us over with his “Girl of my Dreams” drawing two years ago. Now, the uber cool hipster is at it again. He’s devised a clever set of drawings called “Internet Vices.” We all knew Twitter was like Cocaine, but what about Facebook, Tumblr and all our other nerd habits? More»
Nick Gray, a 27 year old that runs the marketing for his family’s flight display tech company, has been hosting monthly “tea parties” every first Thursday of the month for the NYC Media hipsters. Gray wants to “test out some thoughts on group dynamics” and create “deeper connections” between strangers. Do not go to these. It is actually a cult… More»
If the slow demise of print publications won’t kill you, what you’re eating probably will! Last night, Obliterati hosted a party celebrating the dead (and barely hanging-on) media, as well as the publication of “This Is Why You’re Fat“, based on Richard Blakeley and Jessica Amanson’s website of the same name. [All pictures by Nick McGlynn from Thrillist] We sent GofG Correspondent Carson Griffith on the Thrillist Mystery Jet, armed only with her passport and a sense of adventure. She had no idea where she was going, or who with. This is her story….
“Let’s get weird!” Ben Lerer yelled over the micro-phone for his first speech to us. The CEO of the company that now employees over forty people looked like he was determined for all of us to have a good weekend from the moment we got there (game face, anyone?), as did his employees. What can be said? More»
Today, Foursquare, the social media service founded by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai, took over my old stomping grounds-Omaha, NE. They are pretty much taking over the world, with a newsworthy angel roster helping them out, in case you haven’t been paying attention. After the 5th email and tweet asking me to explain just what in the world Foursquare was exactly, I figured it was the appropriate time to do a post. Foursquare is basically your life as a video game. Technically speaking it’s “a service that mixes social, locative and gaming elements to encourage people explore the cities in which they live.” Here’s what you need to know: More»
Is facebook taking over your life? Are you twittering in your sleep? Maybe you should consider checking into the Lorien Hotel in Alexandria, where you can sign up for a Social Media Detox. While they don’t take away your iPhone at check-in, they DO offer incentives for not signing on, including discounts for the hotel restaurant, hiking maps, and, sort of weirdly, teddy bears… More»
Let’s face it, compulsively running google searches for yourself and hitting refresh on your favorite blogs probably isn’t burning too many calories. But Patrick Moberg has the solution for you in The New (Media) Workout Plan, which suggests exercise solutions (punishments?) to counter the adverse effects of Tumblr, Facebook, and the like. Wonder if anyone new media types took his advice after partying at Blogapalooza this weekend? How many sit-ups do you have to do after drinking with your fellow New Media addicts? More pictures from the event below… More»
[Adrien Field meticulously applying his mascara] While our moms had “Days of our Lives” on their boob tubes to help get them through their monotony, our generation, raised largely online, has a new form of addiction. It’s called www.lookatme.com, and for many it’s become an outlet to showcase their every waking movement for everyone to follow. The official name for this genre of drama documentarians has yet to be pinned down, with possibilities ranging from live journaling, to blogging, to tumbling, to tweeting, to ‘lifecasting”….it’s all the same. And, as Kurt Vonnegut would say, we shouldn’t be embarrassed that we are drawn to these characters. Humans have always loved drama, after all…. More»
A snow-white jean clad Knight has come to the rescue of fameball Julia Allison’s faltering lifecast site nonsociety, in a move that will most likely sacrifice a Harvard education (let alone personal dignity) to bolster the site’s waning relevance. Enter Jordan Reid, the selfless woman willing to rush into a burning building with dynamite strapped to her chest in order to (attempt) to pull the big-chested Miss Allison out. Enter more sinking ship metaphors, plugging leaks in a submarine, etc…. More»
It has been a rough year for the Weinstein Company as they near bankruptcy. They recently hired a bankruptcy consultant and are hanging their hopes of financial rescue on the release of the movie Inglorious Basterds later this month. So how bad are things for Harvey? According to a tipster, he is reportedly trying to unload his controlling stake in the jet set social network a small world for somewhere around half of what he paid for it.
Weinstein has been shopping around his stake in a small world. He needs liquidity fast, willing to take a heavy discount (as in 50% or more), the sharks should be circling soon…
[Jeff Newelt. Photo via Nick McGlynn]. We’ve already talked about Protocols, a private bi-monthly gathering in which twittering is strictly verboten, as the founders are trying to fight against the notion that everything has to be chronicled. The New York Times article says “the quintet has found that there’s something magical about a life less posted.”
We agree, but we’ve also noticed that co-founder Jeff Newelt’s life seems to be pretty diligently posted…. More»
