corn-based cellphoneThe hippies really do seem to be winning. Not only has the tree-hugging environmentally conscious consumer and corporation become somewhat of a standard barer in the marketplace, but also, one of technology’s driving goals seems to be finding and perfecting more sustainable alternatives for everything from car design and alternative fuels to farming methods.

Sutton Place bar in NYC hosts cat fight over wii
[Photo via Joystick]

“Joystiq reports on a Wii promotion that recently occurred at the bar Sutton Place where women battled each each in a Wii Sports boxing tournament TO THE DEATH with the winner taking home the Nintendo Wii gaming system.” [MROD Nation]

Who cares about the girls, look at their men in the background cheering them on!

Is your music library a little flat? Check out IACmusic for some quality tunes that you can find nowhere else. IAC stands for “Independent Artists Company,” which makes them something of independents artists’ FUBU. But IAC isn’t just for them – it’s for everyone. Go to the site and either choose what you listen to by using an artist or genre search, or access one of the site’s 4,000+ music stations to enjoy an effortless stream. Admittedly, my online music-hunting hasn’t gone much further than Last.fm and Pandora; but I can say that I prefer IACmusic to both, if for no other reason than its breadth of artists and user controls.

IphoneSo by now I’m sure all of you techies know that the new iPhone’s release date was announced yesterday (accompanied by a hefty rise in Apple stock). iPhone 2.0 is slimmer and consists of a phone, mp3 player, camera, and internet, with the cheapest ringing in at $199 (meaning iPhone-spotting will increase 10fold in the coming months). Given the economy’s flaccid state, the unveiling of new (or slightly improved) luxury items seems sillier than usual, and I can’t help but wonder how Apple has escaped the mass corporate taint of Walmart or Microsoft.

Reading up on Queen Samantha’s remark on using ex-p2p (peer-to-peer for you people with lives) giant Napster made me think of the number of mp3 sites that I use for my fix. No, not the p2p stuff!

Believe it or not, there are a few fairly well-established mp3 distribution sites out there with plenty of variety for the discerning music fan. While they lack the variety of some of the major studio-endorsed artists people can find on iTunes and Napster, they make up for it with diversity, like a specialist shop a la High Fidelity. Unlike those shops, though, this one does not have snooty music snobs mocking you for liking mainstream stuff. If that does not seem good enough, they tend to also use different policies to download and cost much less as a result, so you can’t lose either way.

g185-150x123I have a confession: I am an Internet junkie. Like many bloggers, I spend hours a day staring at a glowing screen, perusing countless sites and blogs. If I need an answer to any question, I Google it. If I’ve never heard of something but need the information fast, I look it up on Wikipedia. Friends have gone so far as to call me an addict. So when I think about what Web 3.0 will bring, I want to know: How will it speed up the process so I can spend less time in front of a computer?

BlackberryGreat. I JUST got a Curve. This was, btw after days of moving back and forth between the iPhone and the Curve. I decided on the curve because I knew how to work it already and really just don’t have time to figure out new technology…this is also why, even though my staff members give me grief, I will always be a PC girl, even though the much cooler Mac is what most techies use. Now that I finally made the decision to stick to the more conservative Blackberry Curve, RIM is unleashing the Blackberry Bold, their “newest, sexiest, boldest smartphone to date-set to be released at the end of June” [Racked]

texting around

Omfg, did u no r kids can’t write??? Apparently new data has been released that demonstrates how Web 2.0 is further devolving our ability to communicate and destroying our culture. No, it’s not because we substitute social networking sites for actual socializing, or because YouTube and blogs are ending life as we know it by sinking traditional media outlets. The Pew Internet and American Life Project found in their study that at least 64 percent of teens have used informal style while attempting to write formal school assignments—such as “LOL” style abbreviations or emoticons. (Emoticons! In a paper! Man, I wish I had tried to get away with that—sometimes nothing conveys what you mean quite like a =D ).

will

I’ve come to rely on the internet for many things. Housing. Food. Roommates. Timewasters. Jobs. Ways to complete my Comp Lit paper without actually cracking a book. Now, my prayers and nightmares have come true: I can now go gently into that good night with the help of a dot com. Two new websites, Post Expression and Just In Case I Die, are betting that, even in the afterlife, we’ll yearn for that final piece of connectedness with which to convey our messages of love while flaunting our newfound technology in the face of lesser-wired mortals. green apple

In case you didn’t catch the news yesterday, Apple is now embroiled in a logo war with…New York City?? As the city adopts a new “going green” logo, a figure-8-like apple with a stem and leaf, Apple claims this is trademark infringement—since their logo is an apple with a bite out of it and a spiky leaf. Apple alleges that if NYC adopts the new logo, it will “seriously injure the reputation which [Apple] has established for its goods and services.” Because, you know. There may be 10 people left on the planet that haven’t seen an iPod and might get confused by too many apple pictures when they come to the city!

nyc_autoshow.jpg

The largest auto show in the world is being held right here in our very own New York City at the Javits Convention Center on the west side until the 30th of March. The biggest names in the industry all the way from Ford to Lamborghini are there to display their newest, coolest, fastest, and most eco-friendly models. There are also a couple of concept cars that are a bit out of this world so to speak. Pictures of the show can be found in our gallery.

And of course no car show would be complete without show girls to show off the cars and give a Q and A to aficionados. In going through all the car displays it was interesting to observe who had gotten it right, and who clearly got it wrong:

  1. Hummers are bigger than ever. Why hasn’t Detroit gotten the memo? Gas is going through the roof, and people are going green. The “safety” benefits of being encapsulated in a steel bulldozer no longer justify the fuel costs and the large carbon footprint.
