What were some of your favorite exhibitions this summer?
Bringing underground film and art legend Jonas Mekas out to Montauk was pretty damn fantastic! He acted as the film teacher for Jackie O's kids in 1972 at the Warhol estate, and we showed a suite of his masterful photographs from this summer. Adam, who owns the house now, invited Jonas over for a splendid luncheon: it was extraordinary to see Jonas, 94 years young, walking into the house for the first time in 45 years!
Pat McCarthy's show was an endless slew of fun happenings: first he biked out to Montauk on a customized rickshaw bringing his carrier pigeons with him, then he cooked a dazzling brunch for the gallery crowd on a flattop attached to the rickshaw, surrounded by his magnificent zines and ceramic sculptures, and then finally we closed the show with a poetry reading complete with grilled cheese sandwiches, rum punch and a specially written haiku by Tom Sachs! A couple of very smart collectors bought Pat's major pieces from the show and were as stoked to buy them as we were to sell them: Perfect!
The Jody Uttal show was also so very memorable: Her brilliant little meditative grids were absolutely beautiful, and the crowd at the opening was choc-a-bloc old school New York hepcats and hepkitties: Jody, among other things in her amazing life was the gal who signed Blondie to their first record deal!
