| Description |
The Rizzoli Bookstore at Empire Gallery in Sag Harbor, NY is pleased to announce the new exhibition Equus: Icon and Cult, a series of paintings by Sabina Streeter. Opening reception for the artist is on Friday. Streeter's collection of representational paintings explores the image of the horse in mythical, social, and cultural context. The horse is depicted as a larger than life iconic creature, heroic and victorious since ancient times, but too often victimized for financial gain. As with her other works and installations, Streeter utilizes cinematic references, in this case to Lucchino Visconti (Ludwig of Bavaria) and Terence Young (Mayerling) and to legendary equestrians such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The large work Nightmares, a hommage to Johann Heinrich Fuseli (Swiss, 1741) was first presented at the installation Grand Windows in co-production with P.S.1 at Grand Central Station (1988), and is shown here for the first time since this initial presentation. Streeter was born in Munich and maintains studios there and in Sag Harbor.
