Description
The Fireplace Project, a contemporary art gallery/project in East Hampton, is pleased to present the next exhibition: Aurel Schmidt solo exhibition Exhibition dates: August 20, through September 6, 2010. Opening reception: Saturday, August 21, 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Schmidt's work includes drawings, photography, video and multimedia works. They are virtuosic exercises in fantastical realism. Though her composite figures are often ethereal and otherworldly, their constituent parts are the very foundation of life: the things we use, lose, discard, and ignore each day. The materials used are often as gritty as the images she creates: in addition to the precision afforded by pencil and colored pencil, Schmidt’s incorporation of dirt, beer, blood, and other bodily fluids lends an organic immediacy to her works. Far from two-dimensional, Schmidt’s work becomes almost sculptural through her innovative use of these materials and her engagement with the paper itself, with its ripped edges and cigarette-burn holes. Aurel Schmidt was born in 1982 in Kamloops, British Columbia, a town best known for its pulp mill, and learned to draw at a young age from her mother. She now lives and works in New York. Schmidt was included in the 2010 Whitney Biennial. She has done solo exhibitions at Deitch Projects, New York (2008); and Peres Projects, Los Angeles (2007). She has been in many group shows, including: Macro Future Museum, Rome (2009); Mumok Museum, Vienna and Deste Foundation Centre For Contemporary Art, Athens (2008); Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York (2009); and Spencer Brownstone Gallery, New York (2006). The Fireplace Project is located in the former Talmage garage at 851 Springs Fireplace Road, in the Springs historic district, across from the Pollock-Krasner House.
