Description
The Hayground School (151 Mitchell Lane, Bridgehampton, NY, 631-537-7068, www.haygroundschool.org) in conjunction with the Hayground Forum will host The Young People Speak: Coast to Coast (http://youngpeoplespeak.tumblr.com), a musical rally, on Sunday, August 22nd from 3 - 7 p.m. Sponsored by The Young Peoples Project (www.typp.org), an education and youth leadership organization, and The People Speak (www.thepeoplespeak.com), an educational project based on works of the late historian Howard Zinn, the event has been organized by a group of local youth who are known as The Wild Strawberries. An Explosion of Sound and Culture The headliner of the event will be the world acclaimed Hot 8 Brass Band from New Orleans, featured in Spike Lee’s Emmy winning documentary ’When the Levees Broke’ and the hot new HBO series ’Treme.’ Several other performers will include: Brother Joscephus and the Love Revival Revolution Orchestra, The ThunderBird Sisters of Shinnecock Nation who will open the program, DJ Vibe, The Glazzies, The Dylan Carroza Experience and other young local musicians. There will be readings from Howard Zinn’s Voices of A People’s History of the United States by local individuals representing different communities on the East End. ’The Young People Speak: Coast to Coast,’ will suggest a donation of $10 per person at the door. All proceeds will support building local youth initiatives. ’By uniting the East and Gulf Coasts through music and spirit, reflecting on the five year anniversary of Katrina, and the damage caused by the recent oil spill, along with issues in our own communities, we are summoning our young people to dance, speak out, and organize,’ according to 23-year-old Sagaponack based organizer Ella Engel-Snow. Special Session for Hayground Farmers’ Market The event will also feature the school-community Hayground Farmers’ Market. The market will feature vendors such as: nutC, Balsam Farm produce, Open-minded Organics (mushrooms & produce), Mecox Bay Dairy (cheese), Melody's Kitchen Table (pickles, relishes and jams), Zabar Bread, Turtle Island (organic coffee from the Shinnecock reservation), Weefuls (fruit and vegetable waffles), Harbor Small Batch Bakery (cookies, pies, brownies and jams), Josephine's Feast (jams, spice rubs and prepared pizzas to bake at home) and more.
