Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce a new exhibition at her Bridgehampton Gallery, "Recent paintings" by Laura Fayer. Laura Fayer's mixed media paintings delve into the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi - the basic tenet of the Japanese sensibility that reflects a world that is transient and incomplete. They quietly evoke nature's evanescence. "I rely on visual memories of childhood years living in Japan" says Fayer. "The memories are vast and fluid." The images in these paintings could be based on waves, on wind, on music or moving trees, but this quiet rhythm is hard won. Fayer's process is much more complex than the results would indicate and derives from her need to fully integrate the gesture with the canvas. To that end, she makes her marks on paper, which she then uses to create stamps from foam core. The foam core gestures are stamped onto thin sheets of handmade papers, collaged in many layers, and combined with painted marks and colored washes. The resulting effects create a world of constant movement and change where stamped images float and weave among the painted washes of color.
