Philip Scultz, the oft-lauded American poet and founder of the prestigious, nearly-impossible-to-get-into Writers' Studio, is coming to the Jewish Center of the Hamptons tonight. Schultz will be reading his Pulitzer Prize-winning poem "Failure," a poem somewhat in the vein of Ellen Goodman's "The Company Man," as told from the perspective of the failure's embittered son. "You can't remember a nobody's name/ that's why they're called nobodies/Failures are unforgettable" he tells one of his father's friends as they sit at his father's funeral. For all that, his father comes across as loveably ordinary; "his watches pinched, he tripped
on his pant cuffs and snored loudly in movies/ where his weariness overcame him..."
A sad poem, to be sure, but one which is certainly worth reading, or hearing read. If you can't make it tonight, you can here Schultz read it here, otherwise, the show starts at 7:30, and is free and open to the public.

Damn straight m'dears; this saturday is the second annual North Fork Craft Beer, BBQ, and Wine Festival, and it's happening at the totally bucolic Martha Clara Vineyards in Jamesport. The festival was created so that more people could experience the superior tastes of regional and domestic craft brews, and was voted North Fork Event of the Year in 2007 by the highly qualified Dan Rattiner.
In addition to unlimited micro-brews and Martha Clara's own vino, your ticket ($50 online, $70 onsite) will get you a BBQ dinner from Maple Tree BBQ, plenty of beer-pairing demos and lectures, and the opportunity to make a booze-fueled fool of yourself to the pop-rock tunes of Energy Express.

At a beautiful Sagaponack estate, Connecticut clothiers Martin + Osa with Creative Time busted out the Veuve and hors d'oeurves to raise money for the named organization. Yours truly (moi) was on the host committee as well as Jonathan Adler, Siman Doonan, Mark Lagrish and Mike and Eloise D'Agastino. Attendees included AFL's David Chines, fashion illustrator J. David McKenney, and our favorite boys Timo Weiland, Kristian Laliberte, and Sean Patrick Murray.

The break-up diet did wonders for Anne Hathaway, but the divorce diet may be even better. First Reese Witherspoon comes out in sleek bangs and svelte, Nina Ricci-ed body, and now Christie Brinkely, admittedly no schlub before, manages to look absolutely luminous in a ridiculous cowboy/Little House on the Praire get-up at the Wild Wild West Carnival at the Diamond Ranch in Water Mill. And they say revenge is a dish best served cold!
Surfing enthusiasts and documentary fans alike should head over to the Parrish Art Museum tonight for a screening of Doug Pray's Surfwise, which tells the tale of the once famous Paskowitz clan. Dr. Dorian Paskowitz has been preaching the gospel of "clean living, clean surfing" since the 60's, when he ditched his medical practice in Hawaii for the wild waves. What sets Paskowitz apart from your typical surf bum is that he brought his wife and what would grow to be nine kids along for the ride, living in a succession of a 24 foot camper he parked along the shores of southern California. Because it's from the great French director Maurice Pialat, whose films are known for their raw, even brutal portrayal of love and the loss of innocence. Because, violence aside, both the actors and the cinematography manage to exude that quirky elan unique to les Francais. Because the plot, which involves the sexual awakening and ensuing promiscuity of 15 year-old Suzanne as a response to the splitting of her conservative family, refuses to compromise and let its viewers relax.
Ladies -been thinking of erasing that tat, or ditching the platinum and skunk extensions? Think again. Bret Michaels has a Rock of Love Bus that needs filling, and he'll be hosting a casting call this Saturday at Porkys. When my tow-trucker-cum-guardian angel first recommended the Hampton Bays club to me, I was a bit skeptical but the combination of Fishbowls, World Beer Pong Championships, and Girls Next Door totally swayed me.
Now I find out the grand poobah of smoky-eyed, long-haired, white-trash-with-cash hotness has chosen it as his one and only Hamptons pit-stop. More»

"Bottle shock" is a temporary condition of wine characterized by muted or disjointed fruit flavors. It often occurs immediately after bottling or when wines (usually fragile wines) are shaken in travel....It is also a film opening tomorrow about by Randall Miller, about a small California winery and the shock waves it set off in 1976 when it beat out the most exalted French wines in international competition (The Judgement of Paris).
The film stars Alan Rickman, Bill Pullman, Chris Pine, Rachael Taylor, Freddy Rodriguez, Eliza Dushku, and Dennis Farina. Most of whom were on hand for the after party of the film's premiere in Southampton which took place at Savannah's Restaurant. Go Here for more information on this movie.

A wonderful night was had by all last Saturday night at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge’s Annual Summer Benefit “Wild Night for Wildlife”. Over 600 guests strolled the grounds of the 1900’s-era Wiccecomac in Quogue, home of Anthony and Jennifer Oldfield, who have done a great job on the restoration of the house and grounds, including a beautiful sunken garden that guests were drawn to all night. The evening included silent and live auctions of art, unique experiences, and many items to help winners enjoy all that the East End has to offer. Items off the grill and sushi were just some of the delectables provided by Sydney's, and guests danced the night away to the sounds of the Sweetwater Orchestra. The bartenders were serving some thing new; Ty-ku, a sake citrus liquor - really good!
