Nothing Good Happens After 2 A.M.: What To Expect From The Family Friendly Surf Lodge

The Surf Lodge is back, and will reopen this weekend refurbished and with new owners. Previously, the new ownership, Montauk Properties, LLC, announced a more family friendly atmosphere -- but what does that really mean for the flocks of Hamptonites that travel far and wide (well, along the Napeague stretch) just to spend a night at the space? The East Hampton Star sat down with Jayma Cardoso, the "last [wo]man standing" of the original owners of the Surf Lodge to talk about the changes we'll be seeing... starting this weekend. Here are some things you should know if you plan on checking out the "new" Surf Lodge: - The restaurant is switching to a reservation-preferred seating plan to avoid over-crowding. - Their live music will be ending at 9 p.m. instead of midnight, as it sometimes did. - The vibe will still be "chill" as Cardoso states in the article: “No high heels,” she said. “It’s a place where you can come in your flip-flops and your sarong.” - The bar intends to shut down at 2 a.m., meaning last call will be at 1:45; in the past closing hour was 4 a.m. Cardoso notes, “My mother taught me, ‘Nothing good happens after 2 a.m.’” - The new ownership group, which is headed by the Internet entrepreneur Michael Walrath, a Montauk homeowner, is, according to Cardoso, in it for the long haul. [Source: East Hampton Star] And those aren't the only changes -- well-regarded Chef Chris Rendell, formerly of the Highlands restaurant, is now at the helm of the Surf Lodge, and is bringing some Australian flair with him. Former Top Chef semi-finalist Sam Talbot was the initial chef for Surf Lodge when it opened in 2008, but now Rendell has renamed the place "Byron At The Surf Lodge," referring to Byron Bay, "the ultimate surfer town," in his native Australia. He plans to base his cooking on the principals of a simple, clean, local and organic market driven menu. The restaurant will still be focused around fresh seafood, and will now feature hints of Asian influence. Are You Ready For Tuna Time? The Sloppy Tuna Is Back In Action This Summer

After some serious construction, the Sloppy Tuna is coming back to Montauk this summer with some changes but the same "all about fun" attitude. After a soft opening last night, the restaurant and bar will re-open tonight to kick off summer. See some of what they have in store for this season below: - Little Randy Montuna will be back and apparently has a new Sloppy Tuna Tattoo - There will be live music Saturday afternoon and reggae at night, and more live music Sunday evening - A new indoor/outdoor bar area upstairs - The new menu features a taco bar and a raw bar - And veteran Tunas, don't you worry, Ladies' Night and Gold Fish Races will still be happening all summer.

Police To Crack Down On Drunk Driving Out East

Hoping to start the summer off in the safest way possible, 17 new patrol cars will be stationed throughout the Hamptons in order to crack down on drunk driving, reports Patch. The new initiative, called East End DWI Task Force, goes into effect tomorrow evening, and the cars will come from a number of different police agencies in the area, as well as from the NY state police department. The crack down is due in large part to the increase in the number of DWI arrests that Suffolk County saw last year, and Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota told Patch that the only way to curb the problem is through a team effort:

“Local police departments in the five towns and villages don’t have the resources to focus solely on drunk and drugged drivers on holiday weekends,” Spota said earlier in the week. “This team strategy will augment local law enforcement and make the expansion of the enforcement action on the East End more mobile and responsive.”

[Photo via] In addition to the 17 cars that will patrol the East End, there will also be a "BAT Mobile"-- a mobile unit which allows police to do on-the-spot breath alcohol testing and has a holding cell for up to four prisoners. The East End DWI Task Force will begin tomorrow and run at unannounced times throughout the summer season. Though Spota said that he hopes people will continue to spend their summers in the Hamptons, he made it clear that the main goal this summer is to keep locals and visitors safe:

"We want people to come. But don't drink and drive. If they do, they're going to be arrested. It's as simple as that."
