Share Houses Are Harder To Come By

At the heart of the area's apparent demo shift is a real estate shortage. With more homeowners opting to stay at their places, there are less homes available to rent this summer. As one vacation rental company told the Times, the availability of Montauk rentals has decreased 32 percent from 2019. That, of course, means that the homes that are available have upped their prices and, well, owners who want to avoid having their houses trashed don't have to settle for the younger set of renters searching for a seasonal share house. Not when older, wealthier weekenders are surely willing to pay the big bucks for a more quiet summer in town.
