Despite Julian Callos and Jeni Yang’s youth, they are in command of two of LA’s strongest, and most mature artistic voices; so well refined and sophisticated they absolutely demand attention. This September, WWA gallery gives stage to these two rising talents as they present their newest series, The End and Infusion, in a night that will reveal just where the future of contemporary art in Los Angeles is moving.
Julian Callos’ The End is about love and heartbreak, destruction and rebirth. It showcases the melodrama of a crumbling relationship over the backdrop of the apocalypse. The focus is on desolation at a smaller, more intimate scale, while the dissolution of a personal connection and the end of the world play out as parallel events, accompanied by the heightened emotions and uncertainty that they both elicit.
Jeni Yang’s Infusion delves into the dependent relationships we as humans have with everything in the world around us. Melding images of animals, food, music and nature with those of human beings, she reveals just how intrinsic these things are to our lives and therefore how much we come to be defined by them. Humans are removed from their typical self ascribed role as the preordained rulers of this world, and are instead viewed in the more honest light of simply being one part of the whole.
Open to the public, the gallery reception for The End and Infusion is from 8 - 11pm on Friday, September 9th. The exhibition will run until October 8th, 2011.
