When Buraka Som Sistema recently brought their "kuduro" genre of music stateside at the Treasure Island Music Festival, we were lucky enough to sit down with them for some real-talk. If you're not familiar with this four-man crew, we're thinking it won't be long before you find yourself getting low in the middle of one of their booty-shaking live sets, whether it's a large-scale music fest or an underground show. Between seeing some of my favorites like Chromeo, Empire of The Sun, and Death Cab for Cutie in a span of two days, I had quite the weekend in San Francisco at the all-star Treasure Island Music Festival. Plus I got to sit down with João Barbosa, Rui Pité, Kalaf Ângelo, and Andro Carvalho, the talented the four-man crew from Portugal known as Buraka Som Sistema. More»

The Kings of Leon are the most aggressively mediocre band the world has ever seen. While this is not as bad as being an aggressively shitty band, like say, Nickelback, it does mean that they occupy that built-for-MTV realm of training-wheels rock music where, while I can't muster the energy to hate them, it's equally impossible to love them. I don't need to be jealous of Bonnaroo, I told myself. Coachella has a better lineup, I said, I'm sure Bonnaroo's great, but it's nothing special. But, um, Bonnaroo went down last weekend, and having heard from several of the 80,000+ attendees, and discovered this absolutely awesome collection of photos, I'm less convinced. In fact, with no disrespect whatsoever intended to Coachella, this looks really, really, really fun. We'll let the pictures speak for themselves: More»

[Photo via] Lil Wayne kept himself busy last night. While most musicians would have probably been satisfied with taking the greatest picture of all time with newly crowned NBA MVP Dirk Nowitzki, as seen here on the left, Weezy was already in the middle of a big night, as his MTV Unplugged special debuted, making Wayne the first hiphop artist to appear on the show since Jay-Z did it ten years ago. And as far as MTV specials go, he didn't disappoint. More»

via guestofaguest.com: We all secretly think that our taste in music is some magic map of our hidden depths, but when we actually have the opportunity to show someone what's on our iPod, it's Bon Jovi or a podcast on how to get gum out of your beard. That's why the honesty displayed by the New Yorkers in this video is both delightful and refreshing. MORE>>

[Mos Def photo via] I think I owe Lauryn Hill an apology. Earlier this year in a set of pre-Coachella tips, I speculated that Ms. Hill's set would be one you could safely miss, and I then went on to posit that Pras was the most successful Fugee. Well, as per usual, listening to me was a terrible idea, because by all accounts, Lauryn completely killed it at Coachella. But I don't make the same mistake twice, so when it was announced that she would be headlining this year's Rock The Bells tour along with a super-impressive who's-who in hip-hop including Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Nas, Erykah Badu, Cypress Hill, and most of the Wu-Tang Clan, I knew that I wasn't going to miss this for anything. When two or more major entities merge into a single collaborative, anything is possible. Sometimes the result is productive, like when Rick Rubin produces Jay-Z, or the combination Pizza Hut/Taco Bell. Other times, you end up with something terrifying and hegemonic, like The Soviet Union. And then sometimes you've just got to shake your head in wonder at how something seemed like a good idea to anyone involved. Maybe it's too early to call, but that's kind of where I'm at with the "re"united NKOTBSB (yes, that does stand for New Kids On The Block + Backstreet Boys), a staggeringly insane 9-person "Man Band," if only because if someone is still calls you "boy" at the age of 45, you have bigger problems than music.
