I got quite the chuckle by this line on Jezebel today: “Carrie Bradshaw in Burberry in Sex and the Citymovie ads: Potentially even more damaging to the brand than the chavs?”, Which got me thinking…
Sex and the City’s final episode aired on the small screen over four years ago. Gawker was only a year old, and we were unaware of the tidal wave of bloggers that would start to infiltrate our computer screens from all over the world. This March, the famous fictional dating columnist Carrie Bradshaw will be hitting the big screen, for the overly hyped Sex and the City Movie. So…would Carrie Bradshaw have been a blogger?
What would Carrie’s blog look like? A combo of Jezebel and Julia Allison’s (the real-life Carrie) Tumblr with a dash of Fashionista and Sex and the Ivy perhaps? Sure, but we also have to remember to keep in mind the fictionalization of the character (besides her complete lack of actual computer skills). I mean if we start comparing Carrie to real life people like Julia, it just doesn’t work. We are pretty sure Julia isn’t strutting around town in new designer dresses every single day, plus, we’ve SEEN that red plaid dress (which we loved) on her more than once (something Patricia Field’s would make sure Carrie would never do). See Carrie’s not real, she will always have a fantastic body no matter how many times we see her shoving fries into her face at Cafeteria, she will always have the best parties to go to, and the best designers dressing her. She’s not real, but bloggers are. In fact, bloggers are so real that they often divulge every personal detail (sometimes not so flattering) about their lives for the thousands of readers. If Carrie had a blog, would you read it?
[Fictional Carrie Bradshaw and real life Julia Allison]
I guess I’d read it, since I read Julia Allison’s blog. But let’s get one thing straight - Carrie was the last person in all of New York to get a cell phone. She couldn’t figure out email. She would soooo not blog actively. She would basically send in her column or something and an intern would blog it FOR her. On whateverthehellthatnewspaperwas’s website.
I think that at first, Carrie would try to resist it and write something cute and quippy about trying to remain traditional, but eventually she would make the transition!
