Coldplay: Getting What You (Didn’t) Pay For
Last night was Coldplay’s free concert at Madison Square Garden - and I have to say, this is an instance where you really got what you paid for. My first time seeing Coldplay live, I had been told going in that Chris Martin’s voice is either hit or miss. While his voice was on par, he did seem to have some difficulty with the lyrics, but overall the set was enjoyable.
Playing some new songs off the new album, one of which (I still don’t know track names by heart yet) was very Radiohead-esque, there was also an ample amount of songs from all previous albums. Different from the piano-solo rendition of “Yellow,” Martin and the band walked out to the 200 levels and played the song sans piano.
I won’t even bother touching on the opening acts, the second of which was just too psychedelic and had bizarre incorporations of Fantasia imagery (think dancing crocodile and hippo in a tutu).
To everyone’s shock – the real kicker that just made you feel cheated (even though you really only spent money on $9 beers and foot-longs) there was NO encore! I’m still speechless – whether it was Chris Martin’s embarrassment at screwing up the lyrics or just sheer laziness - who knows. Someone please enlighten me if you are able.
But hey – a free show by a hot band at the Garden is still pretty cool.

I was there. There was an encore.
Banjo - not quite sure what you considered to be the encore. Possibly when they left the small stage (after the drummer sang a song) and walked back to the main stage, but there most certainly was not an encore after the set that lasted just over an hour.
Maybe it’s wrong to expect an encore at a free show (which we were constantly reminded of throughout the show by Chris) - but it’s become such common place for arena shows I don’t get why they wouldn’t at least play one song extra. The fans were certainly showing them love all night.
There is possibly a very good reason for this that I’m unaware of - or maybe not. I just think it stinks that the focus shifted from a great show to a lack of encore. (Though watching the fans go nuts when roadies came on stage, mistaking them for the band’s encore was funny)
There was no encore. It was really surprising. They were good, not great - and the band (especially Chris) almost went out of its way to show they were not as into it as they would be if everyone had paid to get in. Chris stopped a few songs in the middle for really no reason. Made the free thing seem like more of a marketing ploy than anything.

Banjo,
You have what doctor’s call an extra chromosome.
There was no encore.
The show was mediocre at best, Martin’s repeated mistakes were entertaining the first time but I’ll give them kudos for a great production.
Thumbs down on the opening acts, I won’t name them to minimize their internet hits and make them fade away.
