Well last night Katy Perry treated us to a very intimate performance. Name not ringing a bell? Well just hold on, cause she’ll be blowing up in about 7.2 seconds. We were invited to be part of a select group of writers and bloggers to witness Katy perform her new single ‘Ur So Gay‘ and a few other tunes in the offices of Cornerstone Promotions. Expectations for the young Angelino are pretty high with Perez Hilton calling her a more talented and prettier Avril Lavigne, and Madonna singing her praises on the radio telling listeners ‘Ur So Gay‘ is her favorite song right now and even suggesting they go check it out on itunes. So with all the hype we wondered exactly what was up.
Well what’s up is Katy Perry is a soulful newcomer with not only good looks but respectable chops, and an engaging stage presence. One could even say she is really very rather charismatic and such. Her music is versatile, throughout her performance I could so hear it over the credits of the OC or something BUT, it had depth, wit and her voice…. kinda excellent. She was pretty funny joking around with the audience and letting us know her inspirations for the tunes. One thing that gets me about ‘Ur So Gay‘ is the way Katy takes the word gay and made it a bit like the N word. You know where it has another connotation, carries a different message. I asked her about it and she told me yeah but still only certain folks are really allowed to use it in that way, (same with the N word in my opinion). She told us the song was about an emotionally unavailable boyfriend. And with lyrics that reference H+M, and myspace, it’s pretty on target, and really really astute commentary. More than anything, I really admire Katy’s fashion sense. She combines super cute bright colours with oversized jewelry and her jet black hair. She’s like a Modern 1950’s pinup girl and it’s just gorgeous.
She has an amazing voice, and this is coming from someone who favours male vocals (screamo at that), but she has both a deep and a high voice which sounds just fantastic.
I disagree with anyone who says she is a slut, you can tell from her music that she has lived life, and now that she has worked really hard and gotten her albums out there, it’s fair for her to have some fun and party on up!

Katy Perry is a very talented artist. She said that she writes her songs based on past experiences. Even if she is gay or bi, its none of your business. Maybe it was a mistake when she was little, although I doubt it. And I’m so fucking tired of every one being so critical about gays and lesbians and bis. I mean, its their life. They should just buzz the fuck off. If that’s her preference in gender, well then leave her alone. As far as I can tell from her lyrics she is neither gay nor promoting it, kissing a girl once is not after all lesbianism -whether or not she liked it.
UR so Gay is only saying that the male subject of the song has gay traits without actually being so. This is not disrespectful, ‘the yoof’ have been using gay as an adjective out of its recent context for some time.
Still, it takes some doing to manage to annoy both sides of the gay/ straight divide at once and still sell well.
