Most people hear the name Bill Graham and they think, “that preacher guy”, but actually, in the 60s and the ensuing decades of live music, there was another Bill Graham—a concert promoter and benefactor who sought to combine music with charity and world awareness. Graham’s perspective most likely stemmed from his own history—fleeing from Nazi Germany as a young orphan and growing up in a foster family in the Bronx.
Graham is known for being the first large scale promoter. He organized the first Live Aid show, and promoted many huge acts including The Grateful Dead. Graham passed away in a helicopter accident in 1991. In his memory, some ole’ jammers are coming together to host the first annual “Bill Graham Memorial Foundation Benefit Concert,” which will feature acts such as John Popper and Chan Kinchla (Blues Traveler Fame) and Dark Star Orchestra.
