A Little History Lesson
In the summer of 1982, Keith Haring decided to turn the blank wall at the corner of Bowery and Houston into a mural. It was his first large-scale work, and this corner was the perfect place to install it. The downtown art scene was slowly emerging in the area, and there was lots of foot traffic. So Haring got to work, and his finished mural garnered him lots of success and helped launch his career. Two years later, the wall was bought and used for ad space. In March of 2008, when Haring would have celebrated his 50th birthday, the wall was donated to an art curator and Haring's original mural was recreated. [Photo via]
