The Cooper Union For The Advancement of Science and Art celebrates its 150th Anniversary at its Urban Visionaries Awards Dinner and Silent Art Auction. Urban Visionaries awards are bestowed upon distinguished individuals whose outstanding contributions to city life exemplify the spirit of innovation and creative and civic values championed by The Cooper Union. This year’s honorees are: Yoko Ono, Visual Art; Terry J. Lundgren, Urban Citizenship; Cesar Pelli, Architecture; Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., Engineering & Science; Leslie M. Hewitt (A’00), Emerging Talent; and Thom Mayne, The Lafayette Medal.
The benefit, expected to raise $500,000, will include a cocktail reception and silent art auction of small works donated by contemporary artists and architects including honorees Ono, Mayne and Hewitt; Christo and Jeanne-Claude; Jenny Holzer; Stephen Doyle; Neal Slavin; and Seymour Chwast, followed by dinner and the awards presentation. Corice Canton Arman; Clo and Charles S. Cohen; and Anita and Neal Slavin will serve as Dinner Chairs.
Proceeds from the evening support The Cooper Union and its hallmark tradition of full-tuition scholarships for every admitted student.
On the evening of November 2, in celebration of The Cooper Union’s 150th anniversary and the Urban Visionaries, the Empire State Building Company will use special lighting to recognize this milestone occasion. The Cooper Union formally opened on November 2, 1859.
