Description
Pixelspace Retouching, Anagnorisis Fine Arts, and Station Digital are pleased to announce a photography exhibition and silent auction, Distorted Beauty, a collaboration between professional retoucher D Tyler Huff and a select group of cutting edge commercial fashion and beauty photographers, all working in the industry today. The proceeds of this auction will benefit the Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center. The title Distorted Beauty refers to the connection between the fashion and beauty industry’s long-seated practice of transforming the raw photographic image by means of an excessive retouching "process", ultimately creating a frame for what constitutes conventional beauty. While the current backlash against excessive touching up of celebrities has taken center stage, and indeed has proffered a legitimate critique of the extent to which the advertising industry will go to project an idealized persona, similar techniques are employed on nearly all beauty and fashion images industry wide. This group exhibition attempts to examine this state of hidden, "proper" digital manipulation, and generate conversation about the nature of this controversy, by exposing the degree to which body image is distorted in contemporary commercial photography, beyond what is "true" or "real". All participating photographers have closely collaborated with Pixelspace Retouching to create and digitally retouch one image that explores this condition. Participating photographers: Alex Beauchesne, Indira Cesarine, Amber Gray, Edwin Ho, Wendy Hope, D Tyler Huff, Peter Koval, Sergio Kurhajec, and Caitlin Mitchell. Pixelspace is a small, industrious retouching shop located in Soho, Manhattan. Formed in December 2005, Pixelspace has grown carefully and deliberatively, cultivating its expanding client base through personal relationships, creative collaborations, and sensible budget considerations. Station Digital is a continuation of the legendary and world renowned Printzone, founded by Shazi Hussain. Offering first rate digital scanning and printing services for over 20 years, Printzone has produced some of the most memorable coffee table books for top photographers including Annie Leibovitz, Bruce Weber, and Martin Schoeller, and is currently expanding into the emerging field of digital advertising delivery technology. In December 2001 the Urban Justice Center created the Sex Workers Project, the first program in New York City and in the country to focus on the provision of legal services, legal training, documentation, and policy advocacy for sex workers. The SWP works in the following areas: criminal justice reform; trafficking in persons; and human rights documentation. Distorted Beauty runs from April 8, 2010 through May 29th, 2010, at Station Digital located at 73 Franklin Street, New York, NY. The opening reception, on Thursday April 8th from 7 to 10pm, is free and open to the public.
