Description
FlyNY is a global kite design competition and fly day created by Architecture for Humanity's New York office and co-hosted by NYC Department of Parks & Recreation. Architects, engineers, artists, and students are invited to design and donate an original, handmade kite for the second annual FlyNY event which will take place August 21, 2010, 10:30AM to 4PM on Pier I at 70th Street in Riverside Park South. New York City youth and families are invited to take part in free kite-making and fun activities throughout the day. Founded in 2008 by architects Aurelie Paradiso and Victoria Partridge Walsh, the goals of FlyNY are threefold: 1) Celebrate the skyline. The NY and NJ skylines are iconic to the world, but this distant perspective is a rare vantage point for most New Yorkers. FlyNY encourages everyone to look up and imagine their influence on the New York and New Jersey skylines. 2) Engage the public. FlyNY will engage the public, especially our youth, in an innovative dialogue about design. Designing a kite is didactic - an intuitive and creative process that encourages exploration. 3) Have fun! All it takes is some paper, some creativity and some wind to enjoy FlyNY. Participants are encouraged to move beyond spectatorship; everyone is invited to participate in FlyNY as artists and performers. Participation in the August 21 Fly Day is free, open to the public and does not require a submission into the competition. The event will include kite making activities for kids and families, live entertainment and kite flying. More information on the event can be found at www.flyny.org.
