Defining Sephardic: will be a kick-off event that explores identity in the Sephardic, or “non-Ashkenazi” community of New York—a round-table discussion about the complexities of “Sephardi” identity and how these labels play out in the different Sephardic communities of New York.
Moderator: Lacey Schwartz, New York Director of Bechol Lashon
Featured Speakers:
Zena Babayov: Communications Master’s student at New York University and active member of the Bukharian community in Forest Hills
Mijal Bitton: Originally from Argentina and a junior at Stern College of Yeshiva University, she is an active member of the Sephardic Community of Great Neck, New York.
Sion Setton: Director of Youth programming at the Safra Synagogue and descendant of Iraqi, Syrian, and Egyptian heritage.
Matieu Furster: A software engineer with both a Moroccan Sephardic and Russian Ashkenazi heritage.
