The Endometriosis Foundation of America (EFA) is extremely pleased to announce the organization’s inaugural scientific symposium, ’Advancing the Art & Science of Endometriosis: Stem Cells to Radical Excision Surgery’, taking place in New York City on May 20th, 2010 at the prestigious New York Academy of Sciences.
EFA Co-Founders Padma Lakshmi and Tamer Seckin, MD will bring together an expert consortium of faculty, including Camran Nezhat, MD; Farr Nezhat, MD; Louise Brinton, Ph.D., MPH; Harry Reich, MD; Professor Hugh S. Taylor, MD; Keith Isaacson, MD; Professor Linda G. Griffith, Ph.D; Professor Mauricio Abrao, MD and others to present on crucial topics ranging from stem cell theory, etiology and pathology, angiogenesis, epigenetics, proteomics, cancer risk, treatment advances and so much more. It is the first academic conference of its kind originating in North America specifically dedicated to endometriosis.
Endometriosis is a devastating disease affecting nearly 176 million women globally at a price tag of more than $22 billion annually. The illness, for which there is no absolute cure, is a leading cause of infertility, hysterectomy - many unnecessary - and chronic pelvic pain, and patients often go years without an effective diagnosis or treatment. The EFA’s landmark, multi-disciplinary symposium seeks to unite global leaders from the fields of molecular science, research, surgery, reproductive technologies and industry to serve as the genesis for advancement on issues relative to the disease. This event is open to the general public.
The Endometriosis Foundation of America is a leading 501(c)3 non-profit organization co-founded by renowned Laparoendoscopic surgery Tamer Seckin, MD and Top Chef host, author and international celebrity Padma Lakshmi, who went public with her own battle against Endometriosis after years of suffering. She subsequently became a new mom in 2010 after receiving successful treatment. The two have tirelessly championed the cause in an effort to increase endometriosis in the scientific literacy and raise awareness among academia, practitioners, patients, media and industry professionals worldwide.
Ms. Lakshmi, largely considered an icon for endometriosis awareness and advocacy, will share details about her experience at the symposium in order to break down the barriers of silence that often shroud endometriosis and provide hope to the millions of women suffering, by illustrating what can be achieved when endometriosis is treated properly.
