San Francisco's Anne Bluethenthal and Dancers, joined by New York's Barbara Mahler, will present "Pluto in Capricorn," April 8 at the 92nd Street Y. The program of New York premieres exemplifies a broad range of moods and styles, from the whimsy and wit of Bluethental's Fresh Cut Tears to the pathos of Daughters Untold. Music includes the lyrical complexity of celebrated Bay Area composer Marc Ream, the avant-garde sounds of Pamela Z, the spirituals of Sweet Honey in the Rock, and the grit and depth of Leonard Cohen.
Bluethental's choreography tackles themes that, in her words, "I consider to be the big subjects. I am compelled to choreograph the things that break my heart, aspiring to render them with intelligence, craft, passion, and humility."
In her remarks about one of her recent works, Pluto in Capricorn, the choreographer noted that "collapsing infrastructures figure centrally in Pluto in Capricorn, where infrastructure may mean dwelling, identity, career, economy, government, or relationship. '....what lacks integrity will be destroyed...' I created Pluto in 2009, during a time of personal and professional challenge that seemed to echo the global economic collapse of that moment. As we head to New York with this major work two years later, I am struck by world events that make this dance even more relevant than when originally conceived. From Japan to the Middle East, nature's lethal power juxtaposes with the popular uprisings and valiant struggles for freedom. In this piece, we dance through landscapes inhabited by personal and collective loss, danger, discovery, and liberation."
