March 15, 2011, New York, NY The final concert of the four-evening Cutting Edge
Concerts New Music Festival 2011 on Monday, April 25 features the Del Sol
String Quartet. Two-time winner of the prestigious Chamber Music America/ASCAP
Award for Adventurous Programming, Del Sol is acknowledged as one of the foremost
ensembles performing contemporary music in the country.
From their home in San Francisco, Del Sol brings four New York premieres to
Symphony Space. Composer and ’avant-cabaret’ singer Amy X Neuburg will perform
her Lonely. Strange Hats with Del Sol, a work in which the composer explores the sonic
blend of voice and strings. Composer Reza Vali was raised in Iran, and began his
musical studies in Tehran before immigrating to the US. He derived the music for his
Nayshâboorák (Calligraphy No. 6) entirely from traditional Persian music. Canadian
Ronald Bruce Smith’s String Quartet No. 3 is in essence a nocturne, or night scene, in
which figures vaguely appear, come into focus, and then waft into a mist. Composer
Ben Johnston has embraced a dizzying variety of styles and philosophies. Known for
applying Harry Partch’s innovative tuning system to traditional instruments, he has also
written a rock opera and jazz-influenced works. His String Quartet No. 10 is eclectic,
employing both serial processes and folksong idioms.
A significant feature of Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival is that all composers
will be in attendance and speak briefly about their music on stage with CEC artistic
director Victoria Bond. One exception is Ben Johnston, who will discuss his work via a

live Skype hook-up. According to Bond, ’having the composers at the concert presents
a unique opportunity to share their inspiration and creative process as a prelude to the
performance of their music.’
Composer Victoria Bond launched Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival to bring
together composers, performers and New York audiences in an intimate and inviting
setting. Since its first season in 1998, CEC has blossomed into a four-concert festival,
attracting audiences from the tri-state area and performers from around the country.
Since its inception, over 30 world premieres and dozens of New York premieres have
been performed at Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival.
This year’s Festival offers a vivid sampling of today’s music. Both composers who have
established their reputation as new music’s superstars and rising young talents are
featured in this diverse series, performed by the renowned Argento Ensemble, Da Capo
Chamber Players, Del Sol String Quartet, MAYA and Sequitur.
Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival is on four Monday evenings at 7:30
pm on March 28, April 4, April 11 and April 25, 2011 at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia
Theatre in Peter Norton Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street in New
York City. More information about the Festival, including program notes, performer and
composer bios, and video interviews is available at CuttingEdgeConcerts.org. Tickets
are $20 ($15 for students and seniors). To purchase tickets, visit SymphonySpace.org
