Description
Flowers is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the acclaimed exhibition, The Independent Eye: Contemporary British Art from the Collection of Samuel and Gabrielle Lurie. This exhibition will run from January 28th through February 26th, 2011, with an opening reception on Thursday, January 27th, from 6 to 8 pm. A fully illustrated book, published by the Yale Center for British Art in association with Yale University Press, will be available. The Independent Eye is comprised of paintings and works on paper by artists John Hoyland, Patrick Caulfield, John Walker, R. B. Kitaj, Howard Hodgkin, and Ian Stephenson. Each work reflects the Lurie’s passionate belief in the primacy of the personal, emotional relationship with art. Spanning four decades, this collection of British art boasts a group of artists who are united in producing powerful, memorable presences. Each has a determination to explore the miracles of color and a commitment to make abstract art that is meaningful, visually arresting and emotionally involving. Originating at the Yale Center for British Art, The Independent Eye has generated an enthusiastic response from both patrons and critics. In the Wall Street Journal, Karen Wilkin writes that the exhibition ’is an exhilarating, sharply focused…survey, deep but selective core sampling of the generation of British artists whose exuberant art seems to defy their youthful experience of World War II and the deprivations of the postwar period.’ She praises Caulfield’s canvas Wine Bar as a ’masterpiece with one foot in the photographic and the commercial and the other in international High Modernism.’ Flowers is the New York space of London-based Angela Flowers Gallery, specialists in contemporary art.
