Description
The Ubushobozi Project, a non-profit organization started by Jeanne Siporin, Alan Siporin and Laura Boyea in September 2008 with the goal of empowering orphaned teenage girls from the village of Gashingiro, Rwanda, will be holding their 2nd Annual Ubushobozi Project Benefit Cocktail Party on Thursday, June 9 at Sheep Station in Brooklyn, NY. Ubushobozi is making incredible strides in breaking the cycle of tragedy for this community of young women - come show your support and learn more about how you can help these at risk Rwandan teenage girls. WHEN: Thursday, June 9 from 7PM-10PM WHERE: Sheep Station (149 4th Ave. Park Slope, Brooklyn) $25 suggested donation for tickets. As a population grossly neglected and at high risk for the continued devastating effects of poverty, the girls of Ubushobozi Project have the opportunity to flourish in their structured, nurturing and supportive environment. Through education and skills training, Ubushobozi seeks to end the cycle of poverty they have experienced throughout their young lives. The proceeds from the Benefit Cocktail Party, in addition to the generosity of their dedicated donors, go towards providing each girl with a sewing machine, sewing lessons, means to purchase fabric and an outlet for selling their creations. In addition, they are provided with a weekly stipend, transportation costs to and from the Ubushobozi house (located in nearby Ruhengeri), nutritious meals and English, mathematics, computers and basic life skills. Health issues are addressed through routine HIV testing and all girls are provided with medical insurance to seek quality, professional care for any possible illnesses. In addition to door prizes and raffles, the Benefit Cocktail Party will also feature the girls' handmade signature bags for sale, including tote bags, beach bags, yoga mat bags and shoulder bags. For those unable to attend, contributions are also welcomed online. Donations of all size truly make a huge impact - $10 alone can cover the cost of English lessons for all students for one week.
