Tibet House US is proud to present its next awe-inspiring art exhibition entitled Alchemy of Light. Artist Mary Conover offers an investigation into consciousness by using the concept of light. Through her multi-dimensional creative process involving photography, painting, fabric constructions and assemblage, Conover has constructed her art based on the relationship between light as a physical manifestation and as a metaphor for consciousness. Alchemy of Light will be on display from May 12, 2011 through July 22, 2011 at the Tibet House US Gallery with a special opening reception on May 12, 2011 from 6-8pm at the gallery. Gallery Location: 22 West 15th Street, New York, NY 10011 Gallery Hours: Monday through Friday from 12 to 5 p.m.
Conover works in the abstract, viewing art as an investigation into reality’s unchanging core. Her use of color evokes a complex state of sensual anticipation and symbiotic calm, as the ’living light’ of the natural world serves as her inspiration. Conover also draws much of her inspiration from various luminaries of consciousness, including Carl Jung, who, in his studies of the human psyche, was captivated by the medieval practice of alchemy. To Jung, alchemy was a symbolic representation of uniting the unconscious with the conscious, much like Conovor’s art aims to do. Alchemy also finds resonance within Tibetan culture, another source of inspiration for the Conover. The Tibetan spiritual practice of tantra transmutes ’dark energy’ into the transcendental experience of bliss and wisdom.
This exhibition also features a departure in Conover’s means of expression with her use of fabric. Large gossamer fabric constructions - rich in complex imagery and symbolism, like ladders symbolizing the evolution of consciousness - are specially prepared to be transparent, allowing for the transmission of light as well as printing. The use of fabric aligns with the Tibetan tradition of using thangkas and prayer flags for meditation.
