The Guggenheim Museum will host a special evening to celebrate the opening of A Year with Children 2011, an annual exhibition showcasing artwork by elementary school students from participating New York City public schools on Wednesday, May 11th at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Avenue (at 89th Street). Student artists will be on hand. Kid-friendly food and refreshments will be served.
The exhibition presents selections of artwork by second- through sixth-grade students from 10 public schools throughout New York City, who participated in the Guggenheim’s Learning Through Art (LTA), a pioneering arts education program now completing its 40th year. The creative and imaginative works on display will include drawings, prints, photographs, clay sculptures, paintings, and assemblage pieces.
Learning Through Art (LTA) places professional teaching artists into New York City public elementary schools, where they collaborate with classroom teachers to develop art projects that allow students to learn art skills and techniques and explore ideas and themes related to school curriculum. The program encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and ongoing collaborative investigation.
Proceeds from the night will benefit the exhibition of student work, A Year with Children 2011, and the LTA program.
