New Yorkers aim to get water flowing in West Africa later this year -and thousands will get a chance to really dine out on May 14th, when restaurants and bars will move their tables and chairs onto the street for charity. Organized by the restaurants and bars along Stone Street, the StrEATfest charity event is now in its fourth year. The party begins at noon on May 14th and the cobbled pedestrian street will be filled with tables from all the participating businesses. "In the past three years, we've helped build a school in Kenya, new homes in Uganda, and wells in Togo," said Mad Dog & Beans owner Paul O’Connor. "This year, we're raising funds to dig more wells in one of the poorest countries in the world - Burkina Faso, in West Africa. The party begins at noon, continues all day and night, and it's all for a great cause." Stone Street is Manhattan's oldest paved street, and is lined with some of the city's best bars and restaurants. "This is about giving back," said Ulyssespub owner Danny McDonald. "All the businesses on the street commit to handing over 20% of their takings from the day to the chosen charity. Last year, we raised enough to allow Self Help Africa to dig two wells for poor rural communities in Togo, and brought a water supply to 6,000 people there. This year, if the sun shines, we're hoping to be able to do even more." "The city really joins in for this effort," said Self Help Africa's Martha Hourican. "It's great fun to get involved with the raffle and activities, there's live music, and a really great effort. What better way could you spend a Saturday than hanging out on Stone St in the sun, having a drink or some food, and helping people thousands of miles away to get access to clean water?" This year, as part of the festival, each establishment will be showcasing a specially designed tasting menu to give a flavor of what each eatery provides. These specials range from $5-$10 and include street favorites such as lobster mac ”˜n’ cheesefrom Stone St Tavern, the famous Mad Dog & Beans guacamole and Spicy Mexican Mango, Beckett’s tasty crab cakes and oysters, and the Dubliner’s pulled pork Mac and Cheese. Make sure to grab a bratwurst sandwich from Biergartenor a delicious Tilapia sandwich from Waterstone Grill, and of course stop by Ulysses legendary raw bar filled with oysters and shrimp cocktail.… and many more tasty delights!
