The National Audubon Society honors two exceptional women with the Rachel Carson Award at its eighth annual Women in Conservation Luncheon on May 23, 2011.
Now in its second century, the National Audubon Society is dedicated to protecting birds and other wildlife and the habitat that supports them. Audubon established the distinguished Rachel Carson Award in 2004 to honor visionary women whose dedication, talent and energy have advanced conservation and environmental education locally and on a global scale.
The National Audubon Society along with its Women in Conservation Program will acknowledge the efforts of women who played a significant role in responding to the BP Gulf oil spill in the gulf of Mexico. At this year’s Luncheon, a special recognition will acknowledge the ’Women of the Gult’ whose contributions helped in the repair and rebuilding of the Gulf Region. In addition, actress and environmentalist Sigourney Weaver and artist, architect and environmentalist Maya Lin will also be honored.
