March 14, 2011 New York NY It takes drive, ambition and talent to tackle a monumental work like the Brahms F Minor Piano Sonata, for a discerning New York audience no less. But pianist Yongmei Hu is ready for the challenge.
Ms. Hu has performed to sold-out crowds and rave reviews in her homeland of China, around Europe, and in the United States. Now she brings her estimable talents to Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, with two bold and powerful works: The Piano Sonata in F Minor by Brahms, and 24 Preludes Opus 28 by Chopin. The performance is on Sunday, May 22 at 4 pm.
Ms. Hu grew up defying all boundaries. At age 12, she was granted entry to the ultra-competitive Shanghai Conservatory, selected from a field of 600 applicants. She opted to head to California to study with a special mentor, rather than following the traditional Juilliard conservatory path. And she represents classical music for Hard Rock International, the parent company of Hard Rock Café.
Born in China to scientist parents who are amateur musicians, Yongmei Hu began playing piano at age 5. ’I was a wild child,’ she admits. ’My father felt that the discipline of studying music would calm me down. It definitely got me focused,’ she concludes.
Ms. Hu has performed with the Shanghai and Guangzhou Symphonies in China, Musici de Praga at the Rudolfinium in Prague, toured Russia with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra and St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, and performed at festivals in Aspen and Banff. In her home state of California, she is well-known as a recitalist, appearing on recital series at the Los Angeles County Museum, Pepperdine University, in Carmel, and on KQED and K-Mozart radio. Lang Lang, Yefim Bronfman and Zubin Mehta, are a few of Youngmei Hu’s ardent admirers. This is Ms. Hu’s only East Coast appearance this season.
Tickets for Yongmei Hu’s performance at Alice Tully Hall on Sunday May 22 at 4 pm are $25, and are available from the Alice Tully Hall box office, (212) 671-4050. Alice Tully Hall is located at Lincoln Center at 1941 Broadway at 65th Street. If available, student rush tickets will be sold for $10 on the day of the performance only.
