DARKLING movingly evokes the memory of the Holocaust as well asthe human cost of man-made and natural cataclysmic events.Spanning the decades from the 1930’s to the post-World War II period, Darkling is aremarkable story - both poignant and humorous - of love, loss, calamity and hope.Past and present blur, characters are swept along by the great forces of history andlives are bowed and buffeted in this uniquely moving and captivating work. "Braveand sensitive" (The New York Times), Darkling uses opera, spoken word, avant-gardetheatre, vaudeville and cutting edge technology to create ’an unlikely collaboration ofWagner, Sally Bowles and Steven Spielberg" (Time Out/New York). This dramatic tour-de-force views history not from a grand geo-political perspective but from the insightful, intimate outlook of a poet whose ordinary Polish-Jewish family is unexpectedly affectedby extraordinary events of the Holocaust. In 2006, DARKLING: The Poem, a book-length acrostic sequence poem of accretion, fragmented self and culture, was lifted off the page. American Opera Projectspresented the world premiere of DARKLING, to great critical acclaim (New York Times,Time Out, Opera Now, Opera Today), followed by a three week Off-Broadway run at the13th St. Theater in NYC. The touring concert version of Darkling was presented by NewYork City Opera’s VOX 2007. Darkling also toured Europe with performances in Berlin,Germany and Poland. Excerpts from this ’new form of theater’ were performed at theGuggenheim Museum Works and Process Series in NYC, and a semi-staged concertversion was performed at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival.(Mehmet: add this You Tube video below the text above)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaxt1uQcOOMStefan WeismanStefan Weisman is a composer living in New York City.
