Carnegie Hall opens its 2011-2012 season with a gala benefit concert featuring the Mariinsky Orchestra, Music Director Valery Gergiev, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. The all-Russian program includes Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme featuring guest soloist Yo-Yo Ma. The concert continues Carnegie Hall’s 120th anniversary year celebration, launching an October focus on St. Petersburg and Tchaikovsky—the great Russian composer who made his American debut conducting Carnegie Hall’s very first opening night in 1891—with events at Carnegie Hall and throughout New York City through partnerships with several other cultural organizations. The black tie Opening Night Gala event is co-chaired by Mercedes and Sid Bass; Yoko Nagae Ceschina; Frederick Iseman; Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis; Katherine Farley and Jerry I. Speyer / Tishman Speyer; Joan and Sanford I. Weill; and Ann Ziff. Honorary chairmen include The Honorable John R. Beyrle, Ambassador of the United States to the Russian Federation, and His Excellency Sergey I. Kislyak, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States. For the eighth consecutive season, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP is the Opening Night Gala sponsor. The gala benefits Carnegie Hall’s artistic and education programs and includes a dinner at The Waldorf=Astoria’s Grand Ballroom following the concert. Gala benefit tickets—priced at $5000, $2500, and $1500—include premier concert seating and the post-concert dinner at The Waldorf=Astoria. Benefit tickets, priced at $1000, include the concert and a pre-concert cocktail reception, which begins at 5:30 p.m. in Carnegie Hall’s Rohatyn Room. All gala benefit tickets are available by calling 212-903-9679 or online at carnegiehall.org/specialevents.
