Ryo Makioka was born in 1959 in Kanagawa prefecture, just south of Tokyo, Japan. He grew up in the small seaboard town of Zushi-shi where from the time he was a child he has fostered a love for both music and art. Makioka studied design at Tokai University in Tokyo. After this he began working in a pipe organ production studio studying manufacturing. After that, while working as an illustrator, he tried his hand at making pictures.
Makioka’s works have been displayed around Japan, in the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and the Hiratsuka City Art Museum among others. He has also held a solo exhibition at New Otani Hotel in Tokyo.
Presently, with the simple tools of a board and a box of pastels, Makioka is stepping out again to explore a more original painting style. Corresponding with his strong feelings of hope for the future, he creates works based around the theme of light. A light that he hopes might be bright enough to illuminate the truth.
WAG ~ Weekly Artist's Gift
Art doesn't just belong in the museum. It belongs everywhere: on the streets, in our homes, and everywhere we go.
So, each week at Ouchi we ask our artists to donate one of their pieces. We call it Weekly Artist's Gift (WAG), and then we give it to you.
And of course, like every event at Ouchi, it's free.
There are two ways to enter your name to win:
1) "Like" the current WAG photo album on Facebook
2) Sign-up at Ouchi Gallery (170 Tillary St., Suite 507, Bklyn)
