While most people were cozied up indoors avoiding the winter chill, hoards of characters (ranging from the brave to the bizarre) made their way out to Coney Island for the annual Polar Bear Plunge. An eclectic group gathered to rush into the water, some bringing their families and dogs as witnesses to this strange yet intriguing event. In case you missed it, here are some of the more exciting moments. More»
Despite a constant stream of premature obits, Coney Island has rarely been better. More people visited the park this summer than in any since Eisenhower was in office. Attendance quadrupled from last year. And if you weren't among the 14 million who strolled the boardwalk, don't worry: this season has been extended through Halloween. More»
Turns out the documentary Last Summer at Coney Island was even less premature than originally thought. It's been a rough week for the storied amusement park, or at least its inimitable boardwalk, which is about to get a lot less freaky. And maybe even lose its signature freak. More»
JL Aronson's documentary Last Summer at Coney Island premieres at BAM Cinemateque tonight. And just because viewers could follow the screening with a trip to the fabled, faded theme park doesn't mean reports of its death are greatly exaggerated. More»
Lou Reed will float down Coney Island's dirty boulevard tomorrow as King Neptune, leader of the Mermaid Parade. Surf Avenue and the boardwalk never lack for colorful people watching. But the can't-miss Mermaid Parade kicks the scene into amphetamine overdrive. More»
As developers dismantle restore the Coney Island boardwalk in anticipation of the park's umpteenth comeback season (where did it ever go?), wily entrepreneurs are salvaging the planks and turning them into pricey furniture. Does the future of NYC's past lie in the same chaise lounge you do? More»
George Tilyou was definitely onto something when he spoke of this famous piece of Americana. At it's height, Coney island was the attainable coastline for many New Yorkers in the summer. More»

It is a sad sad day. After 46 years, Astroland will be closing its doors this Sunday after failing to reach a new deal with the property's current owners. A he said she said account of the failed negotiations can be found at Curbed.
Astroland and the surrounding attractions at Coney Island are a true piece of Americana, reaching its height during the WWII era. It was incredibly popular and the center of New York weekends in the summer. But over the years its appeal has simmered, and the winters have become so damn cold and lonely. So while the clock is ticking for Astroland, jump on a train over to Coney Island and take part in a piece of New York history that will be gone forever. Here are some things to check out on your homage to Astroland:
Coney Island Cyclone - Ride the drop in one of America's oldest wooden roller coasters, and hear the beams creak as you fly around. It only costs $8 dollars to ride and $5 dollars for a "re-ride". And if you're daring you can try and break the current record of consecutive riding hours which is 401. The Cyclone is a monument, so it will be preserved long after Astroland is gone.

Nathan's Hot Dogs - Grab a hot dog at the World famous Nathan's after riding the Cyclone, but not before because it might come back up!
